Wow, yeah. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 May 2009 08:05:24 +0200 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Movies: The Manchurian Candidate (2004) Saw this for the first time over the weekend. I've only seen the original once, and I barely remembered the main plot, so I can't weigh in on their respective merits. I'm pretty much a Jonathan Demme fan, ever since he cast The Feelies in Something Wild and directed one of their videos. The Silence Of The Lambs is among my favorite films. But IMO he's not had much luck with his two remakes, The Truth About Charlie (a Charade remake) and this one. Both were projects that he did not develop himself, but instead was hired to do by the producers. On the commentary track he makes it sound as though it was very close to his heart anyway, but: I just don't feel it. The craftsmanship is there, the acting is mostly stellar (although I thought Meryl Streep was over the top), but the film just didn't touch me in a significant way. Seeing it for a second time (with commentary track) I also realized that I didn't get the ending the first time around. The explanation makes some sense, but I don't really like it and I think it's not sufficiently clear. Perhaps I wasn't paying enough attention, but if that was the case it was because the film lost me before the end. Our boy did good, though! Robyn doesn't have a lot to say or do, but I thought he had presence and a memorable face, both of which are important for that role. I wonder why he doesn't do more acting. - -- Sebastian Hagedorn Am alten Stellwerk 22, 50733 Kvln, Germany http://www.uni-koeln.de/~a0620/ "Being just contaminates the void" - Robyn Hitchcock ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 25 May 2009 11:09:57 +0100 (GMT+01:00) From: "edwardofsim@tiscali.co.uk" Subject: Re: Bumper stickers and what they don't say Pretty sure that's "I LOVERMONT" with a heart for the first 'O'. peace, Edward >----Original Message---- >From: spottedeagleray@gmail.com >Date: 23/05/2009 0:12 >To: "Snakesmaniax" >Subj: Bumper stickers and what they don't say > > On Fri, May 22, 2009 at 11:15 AM, Tom Clark wrote: > >> License plate frame spotted today: >> >> I my cat >> >> It does not care > > >Cool. > >There's a bumper sticker on a car that's parked by my stepdaughter's school >almost every day, which says-- this is a little difficult to approximate, >but-- "I L VERMONT". > >So... > >"I LLOVE VERMONT"? > >"I LHEART VERMONT"? > >I mean, honestly... how did that HAPPEN? > >-Rex > Get paid to recycle old mobile phones - www.tiscali.co.uk/recycle ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V17 #154 ********************************
