Go craigie*! Lauren's bit about the accent reminds me of the laughably awful print ad for that Rosetta Stone language-learning thing...the one with the t-shirted, cap-wearing dork and captioned something like "he was a simple farm boy - she was an Italian supermodel - he knew he had only one chance to impress her." Everything about the way the guy looks makes me believe the first (and only) thing he'll do is take off his cap (movie "gentleman") and say, "uh, excuse me ma'am.." or the Italian equivalent. Stammeringly. I'm just laughing at the notion that all *this guy* needs to impress the Italian supermodel is to know Italian. Cuz, you know, there's lots of Italian doofuses who already know Italian, aren't there? - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.wordpress.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 2009 07:49:13 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: tl;dr (with credits to Rex and Eddie) On May 12, 2009, at 4:09 AM, Sebastian Hagedorn wrote: > My first message, btw, was on June 15, 1993 And it was no doubt to commemorate my 30th birthday? - -tc ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 12 May 2009 12:24:44 -0400 (EDT) From: Christopher Gross Subject: Re: topher, yay! Compare Taffy the safecracker to Crystal the Natural Born Killers girl, or Margaret the murdered millionaire to Jenny the wilderness adventure girl: completely different characters. However, the problem is that most (not all) of her imprints share some broad personality traits: a sassy and superior attitude when things are going well, an angry avenger attitude in times of crisis, and so on. So she isn't playing the same person each time, but she is often playing the same *type* of character. Result: enough similarity to give some viewers the feeling that it's the same person over and over. I loved her as ... Joel's wife (just 'cause I love her doesn't mean I'll remember her name) ... in Man on the Street, when that character did not fall into those usual tropes, and Eliza seemed quite natural playing it. Maybe she'd be better off if the writers *didn't* write to her strengths so much? I hope someday we'll find out. As for Diechen Lachman, she seems to have a lot of fans but a lot who hate her as well. I've read a few comments about how much she supposedly sucked on the Australian series Neighbours. Can anyone who saw it comment? > I don't think she's as bad an actress as many people claim, Me neither. Maybe part of this is the usual problem with internet criticism: a lot of writers who can only think in binary. Either something rules, or it sucks. Me, I'd say Eliza's performance is usually solid, sometimes weak, occasionally great. But anyone who lets themselves feel that way way will be deprived of the fun of just thinking of twenty new ways of saying "it sucks d00d!" >>> I don't believe there will be >>> another season, but I'm looking forward to the DVD set (I might even >>> spring for the BluRay edition), just to see the extra episode that Fox >>> won't show. >> >> i hadn't heard about the extra episode. where does it fit in the series? > > After "Omega". It's supposed to "change everything", whatever that means. I've heard that it bears the same relation to Dollhouse that the Buffy episode Restless bears to BtVS season 4. Well, it's probably not a dream episode. But rumor says that it's a less plot-oriented examination of some of the issues that the season raised. And it's written and directed by Joss himself. It'll probably never be aired because the Fox Network only paid for 13 episodes, including the first rejected pilot, and they'd have to make another payment to the production company for the final episode. I'm hoping that the DVD will include that original pilot as well as unaired final episode. Just pre-ordered this morning. >> i must not understand something about television politics because even >> if fox drops the show, it makes no sense to me than sci-fi wouldn't >> pick it up. > > From what I heard it's just too expensive to produce! Then they could just make half as many episodes per season as BSG, and it'll be the same price. There, problem solved! One nice bonus of my switch to Mac is that things like videos, etc., show up in Finder as a separate volume from the music CD itself. I rarely use such bonus material on CDs...but often, that's because I don't even know it's there, since obviously on a home stereo it doesn't show up, and in Windows it would show up only if I opened the CD drive in Explorer (which, why?).
