Mike Keneally has done it live a number of times, and done a damn fine job if it, IMO. Guerilla audio circulates. Funnily, I just had an unofficial CD-R of some *early* Neil demos plus (I think) an early demo acetate of part of the _Tonight's the Night_ album on in the car, and there was a beautiful version on that. The (early 90's?) Caroline Records _Bridge School Benefit_ CD of various artists covering Neil has always rawked my world. A couple standouts are the Flaming Lips' After the Goldrush, Victoria Williams' singing on Don't Let It Bring You Down, and Nikki Sudden's Captain Kennedy, but really, I love every minute of that disc. da9ve ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Apr 2009 13:09:32 -0400 (EDT) From: Christopher Gross Subject: Re: Of Monkees and Men On Fri, 17 Apr 2009, Nectar At Any Cost! wrote: > me you were joking.> > > heh; and i'd held off asking if you were now in the employ of big pharm on > the grounds that it'd have been impolite... Well, since I got rude and crude about your sources, I could hardly complain if you got a little sarcastic in return. Of course one need not reject the germ theory of disease to hate Big Pharm. Hell, I've dabbled in the latter myself. > i'll cop to not knowing much > about mcbean, but her reporting assuredly does *not* look full of shit to > me. perhaps not the proper forum to get into a back-and-forth on the > specifics; but i'm happy to do so offlist if you like. Actually, I'm not really interested. Past experience has shown me that such debates usually leave me in a bad mood, regardless of whether it's on- or offlist and whether I do well or poorly. This experience came back to me roughly two seconds after I hit "send" on my last post. Mind you, I'm still petty enough to close with a sarcastic question -- why would I be impressed by the credentials of Peter Duesberg (whom I was already familiar with) when the thousands of scientists who reject his theories have similar credentials? But aside from that, I'd rather just drop it. Anyway, the story here: Cliff, the bassist in my band, goes to church with the guy who basically is Throat Sprockets (although the lead singer is usually female), and he gave me a copy of this newly self-released album, which I just now got around to ripping, and I noticed this title, which is... a Robyn reference? Or is it? Is there some older formulation of "I Often Dream of (X)" upon which Robyn was drawing for "I Often Dream of Trains"? I googled "i often dream of" and the first 4 pages of hits were RH-related except for one Amtrak-related story, so I'm thinking this is a direct nod. I'll ask Cliff to check with the guy, but... what say ye? - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 17 Apr 2009 20:45:26 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: Re: I Often Dream of Other Shit On Fri, Apr 17, 2009 at 8:22 PM, Rex wrote: > Okay, here's a curious discovery... note Track 8 on this record: > http://cdbaby.com/cd/throatspockets > > the guy who basically is Throat Sprockets (although the lead singer is > usually female), Usually? Also has anyone purchased Oslo from a store (as opposed to ordering it from Yeproc)? The copy at Borders supposedly includes a bonus track or tracks -- which has me confused, as I'd thought the bonus tracks only came on a bonus CD with advance orders from Yeproc. I'd like to know whether the bonus tracks are worth the price of buying the whole CD. I was lucky enough to get an early promotional copy, so this is the first Robyn release since the mid-80s that I haven't actually purchased. But I feel less lucky every time I realize I'm missing two songs.

Yeah, I concur. It's going to be pretty hard to beat that one this year! I had high hopes for "Hazards of Love," but I am afraid the last two Decemberists album covers have been a let-down for me. - --Quail ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 18 Apr 2009 14:18:09 -0400 From: Jeremy Osner Subject: Will you dance with me I was listening to the Cats Cradle concert tape today and thinking about Lady Waters and the Hooded One, which is an old favorite of mine - -- I find it a beautiful piece of music but kind of dissatisfying as a ballad. Is it just me? How does it make sense for the Hooded One to be shocked to see that Lady Waters has the plague? What interest would he have in her house and lands and silverware? Why would he leave her with her life when that was the principal thing he came to take? The image of Death "recoiling" at the sight of pestilence doesn't work for me. (By a weird coincidence: another favorite author of mine, the one whose name is attached to my signature line, wrote a book about the Hooded One called "Death With Interruptions" -- and I find it the least compelling of his works. I guess death personified is a difficult character to write about.)
