"Lady Waters" great too, though i think i'd rather have heard "Never Stop Bleeding". here's hoping the band will before tour's end light its way into "Unsettled" and/or "Freeze" and/or "Sudden Town" and/or "Elizabeth Jade". oh, "Insanely Jealous"'d be a treat, as well. my understanding is that epidemics are caused by vaccination campaigns. so, whatever you do, don't get your ass vaccinated when the teevee tells you so. me too. although i now recall that, about ten years ago, dan bern knocked out an impromptu "'Whipping Post'", performed in hank-esque style. "You were my whipping post, for sure / And, honey, so was I yours" are the only the lyrics i can remember. i'm now thinking this was probably a response to an audience request. you remember the incident, lobstie? from the in-case-you-were-wondering files: when robyn played bumbershoot here in '99, jeme called out for "Freebird" during cat power's excruciatingly horrible opening set (it was the time in the set when peeps were calling out for their faves). and fuck if she actually didn't start into it for twenty seconds or so! 'twas the only half-way decent musical output of her entire career, i dare say. even to the extent that's true (it's not for me...but i may be the only living soul what's never so much as had a glimpse at the itunes), the point is moot, as we're now entering the post-electricity era. actually, i've been thinking about this lately. any ideas about how best to retain one's mp3 collection as we move into the teeth of the collapse? solar chargers and compact flash media? it might work for a while, at any rate. anyhow, my two fave albums of '09: *Yonder Is The Clock* and *Goodnight Oslo*. former over the latter by a fairly wide margin, i'll acknowledge. but, still: yay, robyn! The ultimate conclusion seems to be, know what's important to you and plan accordingly. One of Ginsberg's poems from that period recounts his stay on some commune out in the sticks somewhere and having to put in half an hour on a bicycle-powered generator if he wanted to turn on the phonograph so he could listen to the Beatles. I've always kept that in mind, tho I don't know how much power a muscle-driven generator can give you. Interesting, then, that the huge flu pandemics of 1830 and 1918 occurred before the vaccine was invented, while the only post-vaccine pandemics of 1957 and 1968 were relatively mild. And that's just the flu; see also the history of smallpox, for example, or polio.... I'm on Kevin's daughter's side on this one. (Except 1918 mortality wasn't 20% of the total world population but 20% of the people infected, yielding a mere 3-6% world death rate.) It's probably impractical for most people to isolate themselves for the entire length of an epidemic (especially not knowing when it will start), but if you can afford to prepare for that, then go for it. And everyone should at least know the symptoms of the flu, how it differs from a cold, and how to take care of yourself or a loved one who catches it. And, yes, get yourself vaccinated. It doesn't guarantee you won't get sick, but it at least tilts the odds a little in your favor. > from the in-case-you-were-wondering files: when robyn played bumbershoot > here in '99, jeme called out for "Freebird" during cat power's > excruciatingly horrible opening set (it was the time in the set when peeps > were calling out for their faves). and fuck if she actually didn't start > into it for twenty seconds or so!
