For me, that's not really a band name in that case (and I'm guessing that the rest of the band members knew whose band it was). So under "G" either way, in that case. What's unusual about Paul Newman the band is that I think the name is sort of a joke: we named the band after the actor, but ha-ha it's also one of our bassists' names. As I said, non-famous-person-named bass player would not be the band's namesake. Enjoy these alphabetization discussions while you can. They're relevant to physical media, which can be in only one place at a time...but not so much to digital, with which organization is better accomplished by playlists and sort queries, so it doesn't matter much how it's alphabetized. The iTunes system in which numbers follow the alphabet is weird, yes - but I don't really notice it much. Speaking of iTunes, I wish they'd not have "BPM" as a field for entire CDs - it encourages morons who think it refers to bitrate to enter a single value for the entire CD (as if the CD's all at one tempo). Such folks are morons also because, hey, the rest of us don't care what rate you choose to rip your CD at... - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.wordpress.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Apr 2009 08:13:04 -0400 From: Jeremy Osner Subject: Re: listMANIA! lep sez, > the first dylan that comes to mind > when i hear the name dylan is dylan thomas She's so unhip -- when you say Dylan, she thinks you're talking about Dylan Thomas. You probably know this, but Apple has gone through several iterations regarding this. I think initially there was no "article logic" there at all, i.e. "The Doors" were sorted under T even on US systems (I could be wrong). Then there was a time when the same logic was applied regardless of locale, i.e. "The Doors" were sorted under D, wherever you were. Then they came up with an idea that was good in theory, but bad in practice. They made the artice logic locale-aware, so that my German iTunes sorted "Die Sterne" under S instead of under D. However, the English logic got lost, so all "The ..." bands ended up under T. Fortunately there was a hack to correct that, but you had to manually edit a strings file within the iTunes package. The latest incarnation is the best so far, because you have sort order fields that let you specify exactly how a title, album or interpreter is to be sorted. It requires a little extra effort, but I think it's the most flexible approach. There's only one problem with it (which might be something the accessory maker is running into): the sort order appears to be used *only* by the local iTunes and by iPods. It is *not* used when you use iTunes Sharing (i.e. other iTunes on your subnet ignore the sort fields), it is *not* used when you access the Library using FrontRow. I have no idea if accessories can access the sort order fields on an iPod. They must be there, somehow, because (new) iPods definitely honor them ... ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 14 Apr 2009 14:43:27 +0200 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Re: listMANIA! - --On 14. Hm, I think I know what you mean, but somehow it doesn't affect me that way. Having said that, all I've ever read by James is "What Maisy Knew" and with Byatt it's only "Possession", "Babel Tower" and "The Djinn In the Nightingale's Eye". I didn't like "Possession" as much as apparently just about everybody else, but I absolutely loved "Babel Tower". I'd currently rank it as one of my favorite books ever. I tried to read the rest of the quadrology, but got stuck pretty early in the first one.
