Yeah, it was Monday and rainy and cold, but Hitchcock has always drawn in this town, and the show got good publicity. Dunno. Nashville music crowds are odd. * Opening act Bobby Bare Jr. did his slow song, and his fast song, and his slow song some more, and his slow song again, etc. To give him some credit, his slow song has gotten a bit more varied over the years. Scott McCaughey stood right up front for Bare Jr.'s set, which I thought was a class gesture. I still remember Michael Stipe sitting in the audience for Luscious Jackson's opening set at the R.E.M. show in Knoxville in '95, apparently having a great time. Me, I was dying inside, because nothing on earth is longer than an opening set that you can't stand, but I thought it was nice of Michael to do that. * Pete Buck's current hair length and grey hair ratio make him sometimes look like he might be a Founding Father. He looks great and pretty darn happy, as he has every time I've seen him since 2004. * "Flesh #1" featured Robyn's sotto voice "More Than This" at the end, and "Listening To the Higsons" got some "Sister Ray" quoting toward the end - and deservedly so with the rackety groove they kicked out on that one. * A guy took a picture before the show of what I can only presume the guy thought was Pete Buck's effects boxes. I wonder if he ever realized it was Bobby Bare Jr.'s stuff. (Pete only had 3 pedals, for those who might want to know; Robyn had the full variety pack of f/x action.) * That limited edition tour poster was super snazzy. I would have plunked down the $30 for one if I hadn't had to spend over $70 to replace my computer's power supply earlier in the day. * I chatted with Robyn and Pete very briefly while they were signing stuff at the merch stand after the show. They were both in genial moods. Robyn said the things I quote him on in the review on my blog, and also offered that Mike Mills said to him after the set that "you don't know what a great band you have." * Meeting Pete Buck went well. It was a big deal for me because R.E.M. was my favorite band from 1983 through (but not including) UP, and I've never met any of them before, though I've been within touching distance of all of 'em but Bill Berry over the years. I mentioned to Pete that one of my favorite moments ever was the first time I saw them, at Radford University in December 1985 with the Minutemen opening, when they played "Feeling Gravitys Pull" to open the set... wow, when the drums kicked in and Stipe spun around and Pete jumped what seemed like 20 feet in the air, you can't touch that. Pete mentioned that having the Minutemen open made those shows great. * Pete did *not* mention his enduring hatred of Tom Clark. Anyone else ever seen this? > Nope, but I did once play in a band with a guy whose surname was Geary (and he pronounced it like that as well). It also brings me on to my favrourite drummer story - he once turned up to a gig having been drinking all day, set up his drum kit (so far so good), did the soundcheck and promptly went straight back to the bar. About 4 songs into the set he was supposed to lead off one song. I heard a "1, 2, 3" and then a thunk. Looked around and couldn't see him. Went to investigate and fond that he'd fallen off his drum stool, off the back of the stage and was lying flat on his back. But his arms and legs were still going - don't think he'd realised that the drum kit wasn't there anymore... how he managed to finish that gig I'll never know. Mind you it's probably a bit like the time someone spiked my drink about half an hour before a gig. Still got a tape of that - it's pretty weird and involves a very strange version of Interstellar Overdrive. cheers john ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Apr 2009 09:02:25 EDT From: HwyCDRrev@aol.com Subject: REAP http://www.nytimes.com/2009/04/07/arts/music/07shank.html?_r=1&adxnnl=1&ref=ar ts&adxnnlx=1239109274-+ggc62JhVlGrbwUYUisqjA my blog is "Yer Blog" http://fab4yerblog.blogspot.com/ http://robotsarestealingmyluggage.blogspot.com/ **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. On bGoodnight Oslo,b Hitchcockbs second recording with the Venus 3, the 56-year-old Englishman sounds as self-assured as ever, with a veteranbs swagger and plenty of the unapologetically off-kilter couplets that fill his discography. Hitchcock has obvious chemistry with the Venus 3, a lineup that includes Peter Buck of R.E.M. on guitar. But bGoodnight Oslob (Yep Roc) is much more than some R.E.M. offshoot: Itbs a philosophical record with Hitchcock firmly in command, expounding on matters of love, wealth, identity and death in fairly lucid, succinct terms. A highlight is bHurry for the Sky,b a jangly two-step that has a country-western feel, down to drummer Bill Rieflinbs double-time kick-drumming: bYou can easily confuse money with success,b Hitchcock sings. bSuccess is always relative/ Money is acute; moneybs absolute.b Hitchcock is often cited for his lyrical obtuseness and surrealism, and though he borrows obviously from John Lennon at times, bGoodnight Oslob remains a highly accessible alt-rock record. He sums it up best on the sinister album opener, bWhat You Is,b a song that begs to score the opening credits of a Quentin Tarantino film: bIt doesnbt matter what you was, itbs what you is/ And what you is, is what you are.b b Goodnight Oslob is the work of a skilled craftsman getting the most out of his new set of tools. my blog is "Yer Blog" http://fab4yerblog.blogspot.com/ http://robotsarestealingmyluggage.blogspot.com/ **************A Good Credit Score is 700 or Above. Don't know if I've told this one here - but when I was in college, one night some friends from out of town were visiting, and I got probably the drunkest I've ever been in my life. It was not pretty - but at one late point in the evening, after most excessive-drink-related unpleasantness had occurred and I was pretty much passed out in a chair, my friends were keeping watch, hoping presumably I wouldn't do a John Bonham and they'd have to cough up money to rent a tux for a funeral. One of them had put on King Crimson's _Discipline_ (this was probably 1982), and despite my being little more at this point than a stinking, drooling lump of inert meat, at the appropriate moment in "Indiscipline" I suddenly sat straight up and, right along with Adrian Belew, chanted "I repeat myself when under stress..." - stopping exactly when he did - after which I slumped back down to my alcohol-poisoned stupor. Irrelevant - but it just now occurs to me that there's something similar about the way Belew chants that phrase - with its five accented syllables - to the famous John Wetton bass solo in "Larks' Tongues in Aspic Part II" where he plays a pattern of four sets of five 16th notes against the 5/4 beat (GR-dr-dr-dr-dr GR-dr-dr-dr-dr GR-dr-dr-dr-dr GR-dr-dr-dr-dr GROOOON!). - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.wordpress.com ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V17 #108 ********************************
