I hadn't seen Bruce in over 20 years, and it's good to see that he still puts a huge amount of energy into his performances, just not as much as he did previously. (rating--7 out of 10) Saturday--Calexico with Salvador Duran--A really pleasant outdoor show. The band was in great form with a good set list. The only thing holding it back from being the best Calexico show I've ever seen was that Neko Case were not on the bill. (rating--8.5 out of 10) Sunday (afternoon show)--Lou Reed & Laurie Anderson--Amazingly bad show, maybe the worst that I've ever attended without leaving early. Laurie was fairly good when Lou was not on the stage, but even guest guitarist Steve Hunter could not salvage Lou's efforts (or lack of). Lou and Laurie completely butchered "Pale Blue Eyes" and the only other song I recognized was "Halloween Parade". I was tempted to start shouting out songs, like "Do the Ostrich", "My Pal Foot Foot", etc., but acting like an asshole out of frustration and disbelief wouldn't have helped the show any. The friend I was with had not seen Lou since about the time Rock and Roll Animal was released, and could only figure that Lou had lapsed back into using heroin and picked up some bad shit in south Phoenix. It was a real endurance test that many people in the audience did not pass. Fortunately, if you weren't there, you won't have a chance to catch this shambles of a show--it was a one-off benefit (and a portion of the ticket cost is tax deductible). (rating--1.5 out of 10) It was so bad that, as I've said before, I almost needed to lick the cat's ass to get the taste of it out of my mouth. Thankfully I didn't really have to do that because: Sunday (evening show)--Leonard Cohen kicked numerous asses tonight. His voice was super gravelly, but he was hitting all the notes. It was pretty much a greatest hits show with almost no weaker material tossed in. Leonard was not only sang well, but played a decent amount of guitar, joked, told stories, danced, and skipped on and off stage. Not bad for a 75 year old, and his three hour plus set topped Springsteen by almost half an hour. If you were debating on whether it would be worth dropping a hundred bucks or more to see someone old enough to be Robyn's dad, go for it. You'll probably be glad that you did. (rating--9.5 out of 10) Later, Marc I think the mistake a lot of us make is thinking the state-appointed psychiatrist is our "friend."
