Anyone know where I can get a good $30 tape deck? All I can find are either $10 tape-eating walkmans or $200 stereo systems. Also, I got a chance to see Robyn Hitchcock, Bill Rieflin (on snare drum and maraca), and Grant Lee Phillips at Amoeba Records last week. In addition to the new material, they played The Wreck of the Arthur Lee, Queen Elvis, and Trams of Old London. I got my copy of Goodnight Oslo signed; he asked me what my favorite shape was, which is why mine has a picture of a square on it (yeah, I panicked). I heard him asking the guy behind me what his favorite vegetable was (and I hadn't even thought about the Beach Boys connection there until now). He seemed to be concentrating on what he should ask people next, but if I had to sign 100 things in a row I'd probably do the same. Thought about asking him to make it out to Terrence, but I didn't want to go into how to spell it or, worse, get it misspelled. That bastard! He did the same thing to me two years ago -- cancelled the Madison Square Garden gigs. He claimed it was because of illness, but everyone I knew suspected it was because ticket sales were slow -- he obviously could not sell out the venue, and got pissy. I love Morrissey, but being a fan of his is kind of like being in a bad relationship. > Looking forward to the Pogues tomorrow night, though. Here's hoping I > can remember the show. And shane shows. Alive. I've seen the Pogues a few times. Once, Shane was over two hours late, and when he finally showed up, the crowd was so angry they flung beer bottles at him. One actually clocked him in the head, and except for a reflexive jerk backwards, he did not seem to notice. Another time, Shane was in a wheelchair, and was extremely drunk. They kept wheeling him off the stage every time Spider had a song, much to Spider's visible annoyance. But I have to say, last year Shane impressed me. Not only was he on time, but he wasn't visibly loaded, and seemed actually *happy* to be there. The rest of the band seemed to hate him somewhat lese than usual, too. So -- good luck! I've recently seen two great shows. David Byrne from the FRONT ROW at Radio City, which was amazing. If you can check him out this tour, do so. He's doing selections from his career working with Brian Eno, so it's the next best thing to a Talking Heads reunion. In fact, he played almost the entirety of "Remain in Light." Because Talking Heads are one of my favorite bands, and "Remain In Light" is my favorite album of all time, you can imagine how happy I was to be there, let alone finding myself in the front freaking row! The show is something to see, too -- he's got a decent-sized band behind him, and the entire thing is choreographed with a trio of dancers. For the most part, they whirl around the stage doing jittery, Twyla-Tharp style moves, but occasionally they interact with the band in various amusing ways. (During "I Zimbra," they seized control of the background singer's microphones and kept moving them around to increasingly stranger positions.) I also saw Van Morrison's "Astral Weeks Live" at the Beacon. The first set was Van and his big band -- mostly a motley collection of hits and misses, overall pretty good, but have to say, at times I felt like Van was phoning it in. But the second set was "Astral Weeks" in its entirety, and -- well, it was phenomenal. It seemed like Van was inventing the songs on the spot; each invested with an intimate sense of wonder, every word a discovery, each song a small masterpiece of passion, nuance, care, and craft. I honestly felt like he was casting a spell -- I listened with tears running down my face, mesmerized. I've only been that spellbound by a singer on a few occasions -- Patti Smith, Placido Domingo, Rene Fleming, and Rufus Wainwright come to mind. Having said that, he's really a weird guy, isn't he? I mean, he used a gold-plated microphone with a giant "VM" logo emblazoned on the stand... - --Quail ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Mar 2009 13:11:01 -0400 From: m swedene Subject: Re: Morrissey, McGowan, Byrne, and Van Morrison On Mon, Mar 9, 2009 at 12:14 PM, Great Quail wrote: > Mr. Thomas writes, > > > Morrissey canceled here in town on Saturday night. > > That bastard! Two of my > blog-crushes have been writing a lot about it, so that serves to pull > me in I guess. Kinda the same here, except that I did read the series back when it first came out-- it was among the "comics come of age" phenomena that sort of crossed paths with the waning years of my comics fandom. I remember being impressed with it, although not as enamored of it as Moore's Miracleman series. There was a lot of stuff around at that time that seemed to be closing the door on the superhero genre, getting it about as good as it was going to get. I get slightly nostalgic about having been in on some kind of mild revolution in an art form, and imagine that my fifteen-year-old-self would've been smugly amused to know that "Watchmen" and (sort of) "The Dark Knight" would be critically beloved blockbusters in a mere twenty-some years' time. But no, that doesn't make me want to see it as a film. I glanced over my old copies of it this past summer knowing that the film was coming, and it seemed to me that part of what had made it so great at the time was that it was so very specific to its medium. That, and me not being too up to date with genre movies over the past decade or so leaves me just a little too out of the loop for keen interest. Nerd World has just changed a lot since I lived there full time, I guess. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Mar 2009 20:43:10 -0400 From: Maximilian Lang Subject: Faster. Louder and far more out of Control! New live compilation I originally posted this on Facebook last week but thought some here might enjoy it as well. Max For five and a half years I was a rabid audience taper. I recorded maybe 75-100+ shows on minidisc with high quality clip on directional microphones. They've been gathering dust for a while, so I decided to bust some out and listen to them. Then I thought it would be great to share some highlights with old and new friends here on the web. They are mp3s, the flow is a lot better than the last compilation I did, very little extraneous chat, things move along quickly and the sound quality is almost all very good. Audience recording do not sound like studio releases but honestly after a minute or so you get acclimated to hearing it. Some interesting moments will be on these. I tried to tag people that I know were at certain shows, music collectors or maybe just need a bit of fun distraction, and can't we all these days! It won't let me tag as many as I want, sorry..no rhyme or reason if you were not. I have the notes below, they are not included in the zip file with the sound files, don't be afraid to unzip my friends! The link is below. Max 1) Say Something - Dr. Dog @ Maxwell's 6/22/05- This was the third time I had seen Dr. Dog. I'd previously seen them open for My Morning Jacket and Camper Van Beethoven . I decided to record them this time, opening for the New Pornographers. I'm glad I did, they played really well that night and at my favorite venue. 2) Twin Cinemas - the New Pornographers @ Maxwell's 6/22/05- The first or second date for the new album, meaning the first or second night for AC's niece filling in for Neko. She did a good job though the entire band sounded a bit like they could have had a few more shows under their collective belt to be firing on all cylinders. 3) Apologies to Insect Life- British Sea Power @ The North Star Bar 3/12/04 - First time I ever saw them, on Quail's recommendation. They were really great that night. I've seen them four times now, half of those shows are some of the best shows I have seen...the others were nothing to write home about. 4) The Eliminator -Dick Dale @ the North Star Bar 6/6/04 - It's Dick Dale, sounds great....spends too much time talking during his shows...but, IT'S DICK DALE! 5) I'm Happy but You don't Like Me -Asobi Sexsu @ the Mercury Lounge 3/27/04 - I decided to record them and Blake Hazzard when they were opening for Bettie Seveert. I remember really liking this song and thinking that Blake Hazzard was really cute in a cheerleader kinda way! 6) Everything Hits at Once -Spoon @ the TLA 6/4/05 - I didn't know anything about Spoon, I went to see The Clientele, the clientele were the openers. I decided to stay and record Spoon despite my then wife's clearly angry disapproval. When we split, she asked me to copy this show but none of the other Spoon stuff I had. It 's one of my 2 or 3 favorite recordings of mine. Also, she's an even bigger fan than me now! 7) Pass the Hatchet - Southern Culture on the Skids @ the North Star Bar 4/4/4 - I often read critics slam this bad. SCOTS are a party band, I'd say an even better party band than The B-52'S , can you catch a free piece of fried chicken at a B-52's show? Let me chop it! 8) Been Hiding - The Aisler Set - the Trocadero 10/11/03 -I saw them open for the Clientele and Yo La Tengo within the space of a month. I liked them enough to record them the second time I saw them. They did do Hey Lover, which is great but live...not so much so. 9) Catholic Block - Sonic Youth @ Maxwell's 4/16/05 - I wonder why SY don't play at Maxwell's more, Steve Shelley owns a third of the place. Anyhow they played two sets, I recorded bofum, this is from the first set. There is a soundboard of the first set floating around somewhere. 10) Through with People - Portastatic @ the Khyber 9/7/05 - Great show, they did San Andreas twice because some fan was begging for it! The sound in the Kyhber is super harsh, sorry but it is a good take. 11) What Love Is - Rocket from the Tombs @ the North Star Bar 7/8/03- One of those shows, peels the paint off the walls. I was standing to the left of the stage between a 600 lbs man in a chair and a transsexual midget, they seemed to be acquainted. There were multiple people filming Richard Lloyd's hands, this is the night that I became totally enamored with Lloyd's playing. 60 minutes of fury. 12) Good, not Great - Mission of Burma @ The Bowery Ballroom 1/15/05 - They sound so great...'where is the fucking compassion around here?'. I think you can hear Clint Connelly say 'that felt way too good', I agree. 13) Nessicito - Julianna Hatfield @ the North Star Bar 7/7/04 - I'm not a huge fan of her's but I do like this song. Even here though, I find her a bet too precious about herself. Her online post about her nude album cover a few year back made me wonder if she is sane...that girl needs to eat some burgers and gain some weight, she looks like a skeleton...the song is catchy though! 14) Shoulderblade - The Teeth @ Johnny Brenda's (summer)2007 - I got into this band about a year before they split. Their last album, You're my Lover Now is worth seeking out. They have a far more frenetic sound when they played out live. Every show I ever recorded at Johnny Brenda's was hissy. 15) All for you Sophia - Franz Ferdinand @ Shampoo 6/19/04- Yes, FF played Shampoo, it was a Making Time event. It was packed, I was getting elbowed from 6 different sides by people blissing out on X. It was the biggest fire trap I've ver been in, they way oversold the event. The sound was incredible though! 16) Honey - Fiest @ the 1'st Unitarian Church 5/13/05 - She was then little known and was opening a leg of British Sea Power's tour. I told all my NYC friends to be sure to get there early to see Fiest...they hated her and Andy in London wanted to be reimbursed for his purchase of her cd...I hope they'vee changed their minds over the years! 17) Off the Record - My Morning Jacket @ Festival Pier 5/23/05 - I hate outdoor shows, they sound better if you record a bit closer, it's punchier. They opened for Wilco that day. The usual greatness. 18) Girl Anachronism - the Dresden Dolls @ the TLA 5/14/04 -They opened for Mission of Burma this night. They are so good but their fans can border into creepy land...sorry. There are some of the usual TLA sound issues, mostly on her mic. Sometimes it pays to show up for the openers! 19) Car Radio - Spoon @ the TLA 6/4/05 - More Spoon, I told you I like this recording! 20) Spiders - Wilco @ Festival Pier 5/23/05 - Long show, great show, good crowd...Nels Klien.....holy shit Nels Klien! _________________________________________________________________ Windows Live Contacts: Organize your contact list. http://windowslive.com/connect/post/marcusatmicrosoft.spaces.live.com-Blog-cn s!503D1D86EBB2B53C!2285.entry?ocid=TXT_TAGLM_WL_UGC_Contacts_032009 ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 9 Mar 2009 20:53:12 -0400 From: Maximilian Lang Subject: RE: Faster.
