So the one drawback I've discovered so far with my new Mac Book isn't a drawback with the Mac Book - it's that the camera I'd purchased previously, a Sony DSC-W80, is notoriously incompatible with Mac. < http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1244018&tstart=0>. And Sony refuses to do anything about it, it seems. I've tried changing the settings on the camera to PictBridge, and ImageCapture recognizes the camera and the images...but it then insists (against all evidence on the camera side) that the images are locked, and it usually takes four or five repeated attempts per image to actually load the things onto the computer. It would appear my best option is to get a memory card reader. The Sony uses a Memory Stick Pro Duo. Anyone else in this same situation, or have any > recommendations? well, if you're in the market for a new printer to go with your mac, you can get an HP "all-in-one." one of its features is printing photos straight from memory cards, and it can also transfer them (it's kind of cool - it prints out a "contact sheet" and then you can "order" prints by marking the "contact sheet" like it's an SAT test - fill in this dot for a 4x6 sheet of -- fill in that dot for photographs numbered 11, 13,14, etc.) also, just as general vague advice, my dad has a card reader for his PC and it's always worked as expected. it's a USB device (surprise) and the "brand" is promaster (not sure i'm correct, but i think of promaster as a sort of generic brand for camera accessories) part of the point being that it's not a name brand, and works fine all the same. i like to use the card reader because then i don't have to remember what setting to put the camera on when transferring pictures. as ever, lauren p.s. i'm quite sure i quote terms more than necessary ("like this, for example"), but can never seem to figure out a way to unquote my way out of it (although i could probably cut down by not using quotes as a stand-in for bold, italics, lead caps, etc.) - -- "people with opinions just go around bothering one another." -- the buddha ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 06 Mar 2009 21:42:35 -0800 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: some new stuff at RH.com On Mar 6, 2009, at 9:09 PM, HwyCDRrev@aol.com wrote: > http://www.robynhitchcock.com/auditori.htm Nice essay on record stores. Sony is so far up their own proprietary arses that they can't even decide on one form factor for their memory cards. Even when using the adaptor, some readers can't read certain types of MemorySticks*. A recent SanDisk should do the trick. Stewart *: to be fair, SD & SDHC have the same problem, but at least they are the same size, and the new high capacity cards say SDHC clearly on them. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Mar 2009 04:52:18 -0800 (PST) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Re: Fretless Colin Stewart C. Those were the original CD issues; they've all since been replaced with the reissues that move all the b-sides to after the albums. "I love how (coffee) makes me feel. Didn't really need one, I thought - but still: duh. Anyway, setting up my printer (an HP2110 all-in-one), it printed fine (didn't need to install anything for that) but I could not get its scanning function to work. Removed the printer, reinstalled, blah-blah-blah. At the same time, I had a bunch of gift cert/coupons available...and I realized I could essentially buy the very same printer Mac was offering, and for about the same nothing I could have gotten it for. What's cool is, looking around, it seemed to be one of the better-reviewed, more suitable printers available - so yeah, I have a new printer (Canon Pixma MP620). It does have a card reader - but I'm rarely interested in printing photos. Looking through the manual, it looks as if I *may* be able to set up the memory card reader so I can transfer images to the computer...I'll have to fiddle with it. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.wordpress.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 07 Mar 2009 09:35:09 -0800 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: grrrr... Wise choice! We had an HP all-in-one for a couple of years before junking it. Got a Canon and couldn't be happier. I'm pretty sure the Canon functions as a card reader by default - either that or it's just one preference to set. - -tc ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 Mar 2009 22:29:58 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: Re: grrrr... Actually...I could read from the card but only if it's connected directly: for some reason (it sez in the manual) Mac 10.5.x can't read from the card via network. Time to buy a card reader, I guess... Fortunately, it's not as if they cost a zillion dollars. Someone in that thread on the Apple Forums I linked to earlier pointed out that camera manufacturers ought to just include card readers with the cameras instead of messing around with cables and software...definitely agree. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.wordpress.com ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V17 #67 *******************************
