That's the only one I know. I thought the rigid stereotyping of the different nationalities was hilarious. When C is in Germany, there is a raucous banquet, all the Germans are fat and boorish, and they throw their glasses into the fireplace when they are finished drinking. In Spain, C is with a family, all the members of which have the complexions of people in El Greco paintings. The best thing about the whole movie is Nino Rota's score, which is nothing less than spellbinding. I must have seen the movie at least 30 years ago, but I still recognize the music if snippets are used in other places. I am taking this down this Friday or Saturday, if you'd like a copy you should DL it in the next coupla days! Free music! I'll have another up this weekend. Max For five and a half years I was a rabid audience taper. I recorded maybe 75-100+ shows on minidisc with high quality clip on directional microphones. They've been gathering dust for a while, so I decided to bust some out and listen to them. Then I thought it would be great to share some highlights with old and new friends here on the web. I hope this is going to be the first in a series of these discs. They are mp3s and are unedited, there are some bit's of intros to the previous artists next song, which you won't hear. There are no smooth fades or transitions and the sound quality is almost all very good. Audience recording do not sound like studio releases but honestly after a minute or so you get acclimated to hearing it. I started this a couple of weeks ago and have been a little busy since but I think the next one will pop up rather quickly. Some interesting moments will be on these. I tried to tag people that I know were at certain shows, music collectors or maybe just need a bit of fun distraction, and can't we all these days! It won't let me tag as many as I want, sorry..no rhyme or reason if you were not. Enjoy, Max (aka MagicAleX) Here is the link ...it's in a zip, don't be afraid to unzip! 1) My Little Red Book - Love @ the Trocader10/19/ 03 - Arthur lee sounds much better then he did the year before, when he did his first tour since regaining his freedom. I had forgotten how good he sounded. The whole night a ascot sporting, work boot wearing, Alan Rifkin doppelganger was more or less in my face swooning over the music and acting like he was conducting an orchestra or even trying to manipulate the sound with his hands....it was so annoying I never really bothered to listen to this show until a couple of weeks ago...Alan Rifkin no longer comes to mind. 2) Where are the Prawns? - The Soft Boys@ Maxwell's 10/25/02 - This was their second reunion tour. The first reunion tour was good and fun, this one was far better. They sounded like some very large nasty beast which had been awoken and was roaring and in complete attack mode. This was the longest show of their tour and I think half the people there were taping it...Woj, Tim, Ferris, Frank, someone got a soundboard and of course this one. I was lucky to get a bit of a stereo effect. 3) Log 22 - Bettie Seveert @ Maxwell's 3/22/03 - This is from the first go around for the Log 22 album. They toured here a lot for that album, which was fine because it was great. The following release added a young keyboard player whose bleeps and bloops overwhelmed their sound. THEY ARE A GUITAR BAND....The last time I saw them in Philly in 2006 there were 11 people in the crowd, one was my ex-wife and another was passed out on a barstool, beer in hand. The moment the show ended (no encore) the drunk collapsed off the stool spilling the beer all over himself....ditch the keyboards. 4) Souls in Isolation - The Chameleons UK @ JC Dobbs 10/3/02 - I never ever thought I would see this band play live. It was great, though I am still somewhat confused by addition of a Jamaican bongo player. This is a great performance of this song but it is a bit dodgy at the end, the PA went on the fritz, so it's a bit distorted for a minute or more....listen to those guitars! 5) Between Clarke and Hilldale - Love @ the Trocadero 10/19/03 - The world needs more Love! 6) The Party's Crashing Us - Of Montreal @ The First Unitarian church basement 8/26/05 - Firstly, it was about 120 degrees with 100 percent humidity...who would think the pit of hell is in the basement of a church in Philly? I think at the time the following of this band consisted of really, really young kids. I saw some people who looked to be in their mid thirties and was shocked to see they were chaperoning their son. I was thinking, all these songs are about LSD...check your kid's sock drawer! I think when he sings "Matt, Brown Owl over here", it was code for them to boost one of them in the foldbacks. 7) Shoot Shoot - Kaito UK @ The North Star Bar 3/12/04 - Decided to record them on a whim, they were the opener or British Sea power. I'm glad I did, they were fun and I wish they hadn't broken up. 8) Season of the Shark - Yo La Tengo @ the Trocadero 4/18/03 - This is from the keyboard ladden Summer Sun tour, a nice break from Ira's guitar freakouts, though I prefer the guitar freakouts! I think I lost some hearing at this show... 9) Post Pathetic - Consonant @ Doc Watson's 10/13/04 - Somehow, I'm not certain of the year on this show. It was sparsely attended but not as bad as the Bettie Serveert show mentioned above. They were missing Chris Browkaw. It was really cold in there and again with small crowds (oddly) no one seems to want to applaud for an encore, I was really dissapointed that the show just ended cold. 10) Dream in Blue - Los Lobos @ the Kimmel Center 6/19/03 - I somehow lucked out into near center second row seats for this, that may have been too close. The sound in that place is really good but the sound is a little unbalanced due to my being too close.... but then you can't move to another seat in an orchestra hall! I really like the vocals. 11) Hippy Chix - Camper Van Beethoven @ The TLA 10/14/04 - This is not from the show where David Lowery was maced in the middle of the show, it's from the following tour. They were good that night, I liked the new songs live but was totally meh about New Roman Times. I like the variety of sounds they play. 12) Winning Missions - The Hong Kong @ Southpaw 8/23/03 - A band that missed it's window for success due to label mergers on the verge of the release of their full length debut. Everyone compared them to Blondie, probably not totally unfair but still, they were not Blondie. I think the CD came out 2 years after it was supposed to. 13) Call Mr. Lee - Television @ the TLA 3/23/03 - A great night for Richard Lloyd, as always. They did a lot of material from their mid 90's reunion album, which I was unfamiliar with at the time. I wish the vocals were a bit lower in the mix and the guitars up higher. There were some minor sound issues but back then the TLA always had some kind of problems with mics, cords and the PA. 14) Way Down in the Hole -The Blind Boys of Alabama @ The First Union Center 11/18/02 - The one time I have ever had great seats at an arena, they opened for Peter Gabriel. Impressive. 15) 23 Minuted in Brussels - Luna @ the Troadero 9/6/03 - They always did this song, some people got sick of it but I was always so happy to hear Sean Edens guitar solos for it. I have fond memories of this show, having Chinese with Jen Raj, Mike Edmonsen and my ex. Going to the show on the guest list and with recording permission. However, best of all was the famous 'strange hand dance guy' doing his dance right next to Jen and the priceless look on her face...welcome to Philly Jen! I kept the end bit on, I think it's funny and I bet that Sean probably did drink most of the vodka..... _________________________________________________________________ Hotmail. is up to 70% faster. I occasionally eat seafood, but really not that much of it. A friend of mine pointed out the term pescatarian to me*, and I used it a few times until I saw a pattern to conversations that ran like this: "Oh, you're a pescatarian? I'm Catholic..." It's just easier to avoid that whole conversation. Also, when people realize that you eat fish, they often act as if every meal needs to have seafood to accommodate you. It's even trickier when people ask if I'm an ethical vegetarian, because, yes, that is part of the reason, but not primarily the ethics that most people assume. Basically, I try to stick to primary food sources. I figure that if it takes approximately 10 pounds of grain to produce 1 pound of beef or chicken, wouldn't it make more sense resource-wise to eat the grain and quit producing an artificial population of chickens/cattle/etc. raised entirely for food purposes? There are plenty of ways to get protein without going the whole meat route. Also, if I needed to, I could deal with catching and cooking a fish, if necessary. I couldn't really do the same with a cow, chicken, rabbit. etc., so is it really right to pay some person to do the unpleasantness for me and then act like it never happened? I didn't really have much of a choice about what I was going to eat while growing up because my father was the district sales manager for Hormel foods, he was/is to us "the Spam King". I've had it prepared more different ways than I can think of. We had meat products at nearly every single meal I ever ate at home. I quit eating Spam over 30 years ago and all other meat products in about 1986, but I still occasionally wear Spam t-shirts, just because I think it is a funny product. More than enough said, Marc except for this bit... * Weirdly enough, if I remember correctly, it was at meal in an Indian restaurant, before a Hitchcock show, and a lurker from this group told me that I was a pescatarian. Later, when dinner was getting served, the waitress brought me the wrong meal, and argued with me that I had ordered lamb, not palak paneer, extremely spicy. We all just looked at her like she was insane, and she just might have been. ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V17 #64 *******************************
