Can't you guys use trolleys > instead? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trolley_problem More seriously (and having looked at the link to refresh my memory re the problem), the "lifeboat" problem has the virtues of simplicity, straightforwardness, and a closer resemblance to likely real-world situations (resources more limited than those who require them). The problem with the "lifeboat" thing is that the situation is too tightly constructed to reason from into real life. It's harder to imagine likely real-life scenarios so neatly put-together. It reminds me of the classic set-up re torture: you've captured the man who's planted a nuclear bomb that's due to go off in a short period of time, killing thousands, and he's the only one who knows where it is - so is it justifiable to torture him to get him to reveal the bomb's whereabouts? (Something like that...let me know if I've missed any essential details) The problem is that it would seem extraordinarily unlikely both that the one person who knows where such a bomb is could be captured *and* that you'd know he knows and no one else does *and* that you don't know where the bomb is *and* that the timeframe is so tight. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Jan 2009 16:12:20 -0800 (PST) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Re: If my name were "Eb", I'd be butt-nekkid already! 2fs wrote: > On 1/13/09, Brian Huddell wrote: > > > So, women?
