Some of the things in that show are so over the top, yet believable if you buy into Duchovney's world. I thought the episode where they flash back to Hank & Karen's time in NYC was really well done. By the time you read this you'll probably have seen the episode where the baby is born, but holy shit Duchovney's reaction in that scene was funny as hell. Yes, although it was a bit of stretch to believe they were actually 15 years younger. > And who needs Showtime when you've got: > Bittorrent -> El Gato Turbo.264 --> MetaX --> AppleTV You all know that I'm an Apple fanboy as well, but I think it's much easier the way I do it: Bittorrent -> PS3 No intermediate steps required ... you just need to run a DLNA server on your Mac, such as the OSS MediaTomb or MediaLink from Nullriver. I chose MediaLink because it has iTunes integration, i.e. the entire iTunes library can be streamed to the PS3 as well. But if the rumored Mac mini upgrade turns out the way that's being reported, I will probably add one to my living room set-up ;-) - -- Sebastian Hagedorn Am alten Stellwerk 22, 50733 Kvln, Germany http://www.uni-koeln.de/~a0620/ "Being just contaminates the void" - Robyn Hitchcock ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Jan 2009 02:25:23 +0000 From: Michael Sweeney Subject: RE: The Nightman Cometh >> I saw the first episode [of "Californication"] and really HATED it; does it get better or>> does Duchovny just rub me the wrong way too much >Perhaps. It was up there with "Rescue Me" among my faves that year. I've saved up the 2nd season to watch on InDemand in a few chunks each...think we're gonna do that sometime in the next week or so... Definitely. I like to maintain a library of shows for myself and to pass around to others. Adding all the proper meta info with MetaX makes the on-screen experience really beautiful. For example I've got seven seasons of Seinfeld ripped and tagged with cover art, air date, summary... Makes browsing easy and pleasant. Also, I don't want my daughter stumbling across Californication or Rescue Me when she's looking for Hannah Montana, so having ratings & parental controls is nice. - -tc ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Jan 2009 21:20:39 +0100 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Re: The Nightman Cometh - -- Sebastian Hagedorn is rumored to have mumbled on 2. I watched it. It was OK, it gave me a few laughs, but didn't really do much for me. Of course it's the only episode I've ever seen, so I guess some layers of meaning may have escaped me and I'm clearly not as invested in the characters as I otherwise might be. But even considering that it did not seem like something I'd want to watch on a regular basis. The "Charlie" character has this obnoxious voice that really grates on me. I guess that's the point, but still ... I got through Californication. Perhaps it doesn't have as much rewatch value as some others of my favorite series (I'll have to see about that), but it's clever, funny, sexy and humanistic. I'm really curious what season 3 will be like. What's gonna happen with Cokey Smurf and her husband? And I'd love to have a daughter like Becca! No. Actually it would be more precise to say that the PS3 does not allow for it, I guess. The solution is not perfect, but when I got the PS3 I didn't even know it was possible at all. Up to then I watched all my downloads on a computer screen. So I'm quite happy with what I've got now. > I like to maintain a > library of shows for myself and to pass around to others. I do the same, but I keep them on DVD-Rs. I just rename the downloads, using "series - seasonnr x episodenr - title" as name. > Adding all the > proper meta info with MetaX makes the on-screen experience really > beautiful. OK, that's a different use case. I can see the advantages that your approach offers there. - -- Sebastian Hagedorn Am alten Stellwerk 22, 50733 Kvln, Germany http://www.uni-koeln.de/~a0620/ "Being just contaminates the void" - Robyn Hitchcock ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 3 Jan 2009 18:32:41 -0800 From: Rex Subject: Out on the street for a living: unheard original versions So I was just unloading the dishwasher, and for whatever reason, "Black Diamond" started running through my head. And I thought, huh, that there is a cover version that I've listened to probably hundreds of times over the past twenty years without *ever* having heard the original version. That's awfully unusual for me... can't think of another instance. Plenty of instances where I've heard a cover version way more frequently than the original (by choice or otherwise), but the hundreds: zero ration is pretty severe. Anyone else have one of these kicking around in their closet? Maybe the same one? - -Rex ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V17 #2 ******************************
