Today, the term Krautrock usually implies the "motorik" beat pioneered by groups such as Neu! and Can. (Hence its use by every reviewer who ever wrote more than two sentences about Wilco's "A Ghost Is Born.") But in its day, Krautrock was an explosion of creativity that fused jazz, prog, tribal music, avant garde, and psychedelia. From this explosion, various groups moved in many directions -- some vanished into a psychedelic fog, others became almost proto-metal, and some turned to pure electronics. (Hell, some groups had stranger fates -- Can made a disco album, and Amon Duul, well, better not discuss their 80s albums.) Popul Vuh was not the only Krautrock group to embrace mysticism and "world music," but they were undeniably the most successful. It's about as fair to blame "New Age" on them as it is to pin that odious tail on Brian Eno's ass. (And of course, Eno was a fellow traveler with Krautrockers...) Popul Vuh's Herzog soundtracks are certainly lovely, but I would recommend "Affenstunde," which has a lot in common with early-70s Tangerine Dream, and "Hosianna Mantra," which nicely bridges their older work with their Herzog projects. Nevertheless, the ultimate Krautrock album for me is Can's Tago Mago... - --Quail ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Dec 2008 12:11:53 -0500 From: The Great Quail Subject: Re: Re(post): ah, the holy days > It was Christmas Eve, babe > On the Feglist > And The Great Quail said to me: > "Won't see another one." > And then he sang a song > 'bout he, and Susie too > But I turned my face away > As it were awf'lly blue > > We'll play some Robynsongs > Eighteen, yeah, one by one > I've got a feeling > Eb's gonna do that, too > So Happy Christmas > I love you, Feggies! > I can see a better time > When all the fuckin' punk rat-bastard Capitalist crazies see the errors > of their ways You're a nerd You're a freak With Lebowski-like cheek, Cataloguing vinyl like a record store geek You scumbag You commie Boyo, I fucked Nader's mommy-- Happy Christmas my arse, Thank Gods it's our last! Instead of doing something that would get outright rejected, she went the subtler route. http://tinyurl.com/a2gu9t Kristin Mitsu Shiga, 35, Portland Metalsmith; Extension Program director at Oregon College of Art and Craft Selected by Rep. David Wu, 1st District How were you chosen? "I think it works like so many things in this world work, where somebody who knows somebody mentioned my name to somebody. . . . I just got lucky." What were your instructions? "We got this little box that included a 5-inch, injection-molded plastic 'silver' globe with a little cap. My cap, actually, was broken, and I was kind of glad it was broken because I could fasten one myself. I made one out of sterling silver." What was on your mind when you came up with your design? "It was a complete design challenge. We had so many parameters - only use the ornament, not to add to the dimensions, not to add to the weight - so it was a lot of, 'You must blank.' We artists tend not to like to have that many rules imposed on us. "I put an Oregon quarter on there because it was metal and a nice description of our state. I also did an inset in blue felt because we are a blue state, and, actually, since the piece was hollow - you probably shouldn't write this down - but before I glued the cap on, I slid a little note inside. It said, 'Obama 2008.'
