Enjoy your day off with the kids and watching the movie (if you do that). (Aargh, "the kids"! Sorry: if you find my deployment of the definite article offensive please treat it as having been edited better to suit your ear.) Hey here's an at-random recommendation of a movie that would be fun to watch with your kids (without my knowing you or them in your particulars, particularly) -- "Spirited Away" by Studio Ghibli. (And, well, all films created by that studio and distributed in translation by Disney.) Just for the record, as it were, but "Bolt" isn't Pixar, it's Disney. Yes, I know Pixar is now part of Disney, but these are still distinct production units, and it's an important distinction, because their products differ so noticably -- Pixar, for me, can do practically no wrong, and certainly has never come out with anything so absolutely ordinary as, say, "Chicken Little." That's not to say, of course, that Pixar might not *also* animate cats with whites in their eyes -- I think that kind of thing might fall under the classification of poetic license, making it easier for animators to get facial expressiveness the way they want etc. I don't know, not having seen "Bolt." Anyway, just being pedantic because, well, I'm worth it. :-) peace, Edward Get 50% off Hotel Bookings ftom Tiscali - http://www.tiscali.co.uk/travel __________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Nov 2008 06:50:39 -0500 From: "Jeremy Osner" Subject: Re: to all fegs wrote: > Pixar, for me, can do practically no > wrong Mmph. I like every Pixar movie I've seen (which is about half of the available choices), but the only one I've thought rose to the level of greatness, is WALL-E. "Bolt" seemed just about exactly like a middle-of-the-road Pixar film -- a little better than "Toy Story" (with which it had some similarities), a little worse than "Rattatouile" -- the animation, the story-line, the jokes, the sentimentality (not a put-down: I *like* sentimental films) all reminded me of Pixar. That's what I meant when I said in the message to Rex, I was mistakenly using "Pixar" as if it were the name of a genre. Though, I have no doubt the look of the eyes is based purely on an art-directed decision rather than a realistic one. I can say this based on MANY a discussion about how a character's eyes (the windows to the soul, blah, blah, etc.) need to be readable during a performance VS the need for realism. All this being said not having seen Bolt just yet, but I have single- framed thru the HD QuickTime sequences many times and the eyes never appeared off to me. But then again, I'm more a dog person than a cat person, and don't obsess over their eyes that much. ;) - -Steve Sent from my iPhone On Nov 27, 2008, at 9:03 PM, Rex wrote: > On Thu, Nov 27, 2008 at 2:03 PM, Jeremy Osner > wrote: > >> >> We saw "Bolt" just now and found it acion-packed.
