I remember coming out of the theater in some kind of rapture at the audacity of the thing and surprised to discover that it had been three hours long when the subjective watching time seemed short. Couldn't have been any significant market penetration, though - as I recall it was only available in VHS as an import, and the DVD (which only came out last year) is a fairly skimpy two-disc presentation that I understand has the film chopped in half at an arbitrary point. Haven't seen the DVD yet so I can't testify personally. As others have commented on this tour, it got off to a bit of a rocky start, but I was so distracted by Robyn's top hat (Sir Topham Hat!) that I didn't care. The technical problems (seriously, WCL, Get. It. Together.) were annoying, but the three musicians are such pros, they managed to glide over most of them. Thanks to everyone who has refrained from spoiling the new guitar, and I certainly am not going to - but if you know you're not going to be seeing RH any time soon, do yourself a favor and go find some pictures from this tour. It's excellent. For me, the delight in this show was the way the three guys played together. Tim Keegan in particular harmonizes so well with RH, and the variety of instruments added depth. I do get weary of two guitars, bass, drums. I didn't even know what to call some of the instruments at this show! That tiny tuba, for instance - I'm pretty sure that's not its real name. However, in another ramble Robyn mentioned the "tiny tuba climbing up the wall, making heavy weather of it all" so that's what stuck. On the girly side: When Terry from the Higsons began playing said tiny tuba with one hand and shaking an egg with the other, there was an almost palpable spike of interest among the female members of the audience, which, verbalized, probably would have been something along the lines of "Hmm! This charming little person is capable of multitasking in an unexpectedly exciting fashion!" (And yeah, Terry is a perfectly respectable height. It's just the deal when sharing a stage with Robyn. Both Tim and Terry looked a trifle hobbity to his Gandalf.) Robyn also announced that the Higsons are reuniting, before launching into "Listening to the Higsons." The Cape Farewell trip is unsurprisingly on Robyn's mind, and icebergs popped up several times during the rambles ("You're on your child-size bed, rocking back and forth looking out the portholes at the icebergs - wait, what are the icebergs doing there? You live in the city..." paraphrased to the best of my recollection). I ended up sitting with a friend of Max's, who I know I've seen at other Philly shows; a father and daughter, ditto; and a couple who were, um, very into each other. The six of us were saddled with a couple of drunken jerks who talked non-stop. I had spent the day at the library nagging people about cellphones and dealing with distraught, lovelorn teenagers, and by the time these incondsiderate idiots provoked me into the SHUSH face, it was on high voltage. Argh. Don't make me work on my off-time! I was sorry I couldn't identify Chris to say hi! I'm sure it's been mentioned before, but our self-inflicted designation makes it pretty hard to walk up to random strangers and ask "Are you a feg?" And the alternative, "Are you a friend of Woj?" isn't much better. (It's so FOB. Hi, my name is Jeanne, and I'm a fegmaniac...) But, as always, great to see Lauren, and nice to meet her friend!
