Here's a rather brutal column from a Canadian columnist, Heather Mallick, who is generally too vicious for my taste. I have to agree with her regarding the "white trash" comparison though. Oh, and the "Alaskan hill billy" reference is good too. I hope not - I would hope most Americans realize that what they do as a nation, whom they elect, has a huge influence on the rest of the world, by virtue of America's power and influence. We're the damned 800-pound gorilla in the room, and although I almost always wish that weren't so, or that someone would offer charm school and toilet training to that gorilla, it's still a gorilla. With or without lipstick. Anyway: I recognize Sarah Palin's type: overweeningly amibitious, disdainful at heart at the idea that anyone else's ideas matter, hell - disdainful of ideas, deadset in her certitude, strongly cognizant of the political benefit derived from her born-again faith which, curiously, makes it no less sincere for all its strategic value (and which, less curiously, makes it no more effective as a moral caution for oneself), "nice" on the surface, addicted to privacy and control, brutally vindictive to her enemies, and willing to turn friends to enemies at the smallest slight. I never held much hope for the Mets this season and it turns out my doubts about their pitching were accurate. Watching the game yesterday, though, was especially sad considering it was the last game at Shea - a place I consider my second boyhood home. TBS could have done a better job w/r/t Shea memories, but there was one shot of a fan's banner that paid tribute to longtime announcers Bob Murphy, Ralph Kiner and Linsey Nelson that just brought back a flood of memories for me. Anyone else got a read on that whole deal? Miles? I get it. It certainly plays to the NRA "nobody's gonna take my guns away" kneejerk-reaction folks for whom gunplay is a normal part of life. And the "attractive woman who's avidly interested in the traditionally-male-dominated activities that I love" card is probably a turn-on for a lot of these men. Think about how cool it is to find a woman who isn't all Celine and PRETTY WOMAN but Robyn Hitchcock and Atom Egoyan. I think this pushes the equivalent pleasure center in the gun-totin' male crowd. Of course, as Rex is saying, that creates a problem about gender roles with an audience that might still be having difficulty with the whole "equality" thing. But one of the things that I believe is important to understand about human beings is their ability to believe simultaneously two or more things that logically contradict each other. Plus I can think of plenty of women back in West Virginny who enjoyed firearms. And on my trip to Dallas last June, I remember making some sort of observation around a female native Texan about the "no concealed weapons" symbol on the doors of public establishments. In Dallas, this was as common as the "no smoking" symbol, which was a bit of culture shock to me. However, instead of laughing about it with me, she proceeded for the next five minutes to regale me about her desire to train further in the art of shooting targets while riding horseback. I'm sure this woman would be thrilled with McCain's selection and be able to relate to Palin on many levels. later, Miles now with blogspot retsin! http://readingpronunciation.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Sep 2008 10:33:51 -0400 From: ontario moe Subject: all tomorrow's parties i didn't manage to make it to the all tomorrow's parties festival earlier this month but i did manage to capturate all of wfmu's broadcast of the proceedings. alas, they were not able to air all of the performances, but they did broadcast quite a few. i grabbed their 128kbps mp3 stream and chopped it up into single-set blocks for easy consumption. figured some of yinz might dig hearing it. saturday's broadcasts: Growing http://www.mediafire.com/?diqozryzmnz Wooden Shjips http://www.mediafire.com/?k2ni3nwwryw Harmonia http://www.mediafire.com/?2onvngyyjww Om http://www.mediafire.com/?mjigmztt2of Low http://www.mediafire.com/?ntimzmqyild Polvo http://www.mediafire.com/?yzzojgjyjiI Thee Silver Mt. Doug - Wow. Feg is what it is. It's a community with its own decade and a half of history, and it's gonna be conversational and off-topic at times, maybe even most of the time. And most of the time I like being a part of it, so I stick around, even when I'm not contributing (sometimes when I'm not even reading!). Sometimes it's easy to forget that what Feg is might not suit everyone, and I still feel bad when that happens. I think the list can swing wonderfully on-topic when we have something new from Robyn (see the archives around the time of SPOOKED or OLE TARANTULA's respective release dates). No group of folks loves Robyn more or can write about his music with more erudition, and does that without speaking in a single voice but accomodating many points of view. I hope you continue to give Feg a chance, or that you come back when there's a better chance that we're talking more about Robyn. Heck, that link to Robyn's blog entry this morning was an on-topic thrill for me, and was good readin'. But, um, it might not be a good idea to look at the archives during the Hundred Years Broomewar. later, Miles - -- now with blogspot retsin! http://readingpronunciation.blogspot.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 30 Sep 2008 13:03:52 -0700 From: Carrie Galbraith Subject: Re: fegmaniax-digest V16 #724 On Sep 30, 2008, at 10:32 AM, Miles Goosens wrote: > > Feg is what it is.
