Hey Miles. I got the 1st box and I'm thinking of getting the next one. I do think they sound better. I think most CDs/reissues after 2000 sound better than anything before; engineers (mix and mastering) are more familiar with what needs to be done for CD. The Rhino re-issues now remind me of the Rykodisc re-issues of the Bowie stuff, a little brittle and hissy in my opinion....of course this is all picky audiophile stuff b/c the music is the music no matter how you hear it. Ultimately I think the vinyl still sounds best! Oh, and don't let them tell you that these are just remastered. They clearly remixed some tracks - most notably removing the saxophones from The Man Who Invented Himself. A little "Let It Be Naked" action - or "Let It Be Squidly" as it were? While I don't begrudge RH his revisionist history (it's your music after all, do whatever the hell you want), I did add the original to my iPod b/c the "proper" version imho, cheesy though it may be, has the saxes. Otherwise it gets a bit Plastic Ono Band and severe I think.... and I agree with Rex that the last season of X-Files pretty much ruined television as a medium. Hm, I saw that show "live", i.e. over a long period of time, and I always figured that I'd missed the hints and clues. The second season had me completely confused, because I couldn't remember all those threads. I guess that season is much easier to follow if you watch it continuously on DVD. The Scorchers are my pick for Greatest Live Act Ever (in fact, their Lifetime Achievement award was for live performance), and they're both kick-ass *and* smart. But the Scorchers fanbase, at least as represented online, seems largely hostile to Byrne and his artsy book-larnin'. The Scorchers actually opened for Talking Heads at Vanderbilt in the early '80s, and the Scorchers got booed, so maybe there's a specific longterm antipathy there. They weren't - they were still way better & much more entertaining than most shows. I think the show suffered from too many ideas and too many characters - but that's a better flaw than the reverse! I don't have a problem with the Logan thing, because I always saw it more as a guy genuinely trying not to be such an asshole but not always succeeding. Miles mentioned the show's referentiality, particularly its love of various obscure '80s bits. I sorta accepted that as part of the show's alternate universe - you know, the same sort of universe where everyone is way better looking than people in real life, where kids in their late teens and early twenties are physically more mature than actual kids that age, and where they have very hip tastes, usually in indie rock, unlike actual people that age. Not to mention - way more crime than in real life. About the music: I think if I mentioned half the bands postered on dorm room walls in that show to my students, I'd get looks of blank incomprehension. And that's for the contemporary ones - for the older ones, their blank looks would have blank looks. The really odd note, though, is the absence of hip-hop from the lives of TV and movie teens/twenties white kids: that, to me, is what really demonstrates that thirty-ish/forty-ish writers and producers are behind those purported tastes. And quite possibly, in some cases, networks and advertisers - don't want to scare off any audience by having all these kids playing hip-hop - even though in real life, based on my students, nearly everyone does. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Sep 2008 10:47:43 -0400 From: "m swedene" Subject: New Oasis Leaked So much for Brotherly love....isnt this being put out on their own label?
