Sadly, I have to (sadly) confess not to have made it all the way through IJ. I actually got my copy from the unclaimed property pile of a friend who'd died, and started it shortly after becoming a parent. It was my inability to do more than a page or two every third night that made me start to feel like reading was going to be more frustrating than it was worth for quite some time. In the worst of the divorce years, when I wasn't seeing much of my kids, I polished off Neal Stephenson's Baroque Cycle in like two months, but that was an aberration; I never went back to IJ. Finally last year I slowly, deliberately worked my way through the last Pynchon and have been back on the horse ever since... I just have to accept that it takes me longer to get through books than it used to, and remember that it's a good thing that I sleep better these days. So, like, yeah. Should probably go back to that one now, huh? - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Sep 2008 22:50:37 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: update on iTunes 8/AirPort weirdness Okay, I still haven't solved this problem. Background: First, this is on Windows. I've since upgraded to XP SP3. Also updated my soundcard's drivers. I changed iTunes' streaming buffer size to "Large." I adjusted AirPort's interference robustness (I think it's just "on" or "off"). Upon further analysis, here's what's what. I initially thought iTunes was pooting out during play, creating stuttering and intermittent dropouts, because too much else was going on on the 'puter. However, two things: it's been doing that even when nothing else is going on (while at other times playing flawlessly while a whole buncha stuff is going on), *and* it happens only if I'm feeding the music through AirPort. If I use the computer's built-in cheap speakers, no problem. I have AirPort configured to join my existing wireless network. Anyway: any idea what's going on here or how I can solve it? Couldn't find anything at Apple's help site - although googling "itunes airport stutter" revealed that I'm not alone, and that the problem seems particularly frequent in the last few months. One thing I haven't tried: changing the channel my router uses... Two questions: 1.) How far is the machine/router providing the music from the AirPort unit. 2.) Have you tried it with the buffer size set lower? I haven't experimented with anything other than medium, but have only had I think two de-syncs in the ~three years I've been running the setup. - -f. 2fs wrote: > Okay, I still haven't solved this problem. There are no significant obstructions (large metal bathtubs, etc.). After our second-floor remodel is finished, the router will be moved almost directly above its current location, two floors up in the second floor. (The laptop itself is typically directly above the router, sitting on a desk. Since the router is up near the ceiling of the basement, it's about as close to the laptop, usually, as it could get w/o being right next to it...) > > > 2.) And I hadn't either until the upgrade to 8. It is Jose Saramago's recently translated "Death with Interruptions" -- the UK edition is called "Death at Intervals" -- and features midway through, a newspaper editorial calling for "a frank and open dialogue with death" -- who is "unmistakably a woman". Am I right to think that English-language tradition usually casts the Reaper as a man? Apparently in Portuguese, Death is always referred to with female pronouns. Anyway: a short book, easy to read and fun, probably a bit lightweight intellectually compared to much of Saramago's other work. I recommend it. Am I right to think that > English-language tradition usually casts the Reaper as a man? > Apparently in Portuguese, Death is always referred to with female > pronouns. We English-speakers usually think of the Grim Reaper as a man, but then it's easy for us. In Portuguese, like Spanish (and AFAIK all modern Romance languages), all nouns are *grammatically* masculine or feminine, even if *logically* the thing referred to is sexless. Morte, death, is gramatically feminine and would take the pronoun ela, "she." I'd expect that would make it hard (though not impossible) for native Portuguese speakers to imagine a male personification of death. That's just speculation on my part though; anyone with actual knowledge is, as always, welcome to correct me.... - --Chris, irresistably reminded both of yesterday's "reap" of Richard Wright and the irritable Reaper from The Meaning of Life ______________________________________________________________________ Christopher Gross On the Internet, nobody knows I'm a dog. chrisg@gwu.edu ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Sep 2008 19:00:13 -0400 From: "Jeremy Osner" Subject: Re: 1-800-REAPER, ask for Diane On Wed, Sep 17, 2008 at 6:40 PM, Christopher Gross wrote: > the > irritable Reaper from The Meaning of Life > This is generally the first place my head goes when I see reference to the Grim Reaper. - -- READIN 2.0 http://www.readin.com/blog/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Sep 2008 19:12:30 -0400 From: "m swedene" Subject: I am in Montreal for a computer training.Any Fegs up here?
