She took her ever first dose of morphine yesterday morning with dad. This is to say that except for yesterday, she never had any pain that couldn't be managed by a little darvon. The nurse cam shortly after, and dad and Laurie and the nurse Lynne spent the day with mom. Dad called me around 3 pm to tell me to come, but there was no rush; everyone expected her to have a few more days. I arrived at 6 pm, a few minutes after she died. She looked totally beautiful, eyelashes as thick as a pelt. So, the pain came and she was ready to go. She knew exactly what she wanted and what she wanted to avoid. And we all wanted the same thing. We spent the evening and night with her, reading a few poems, looking at photos and just being with her, bathing her. The hearse came at 9 am. Mom will be cremated Sunday, with the family present. We will soon announce a date for the memorial service- it will be sometime in the next month or so. With love from the daughters and husband of the powerful light and life force that was and will always be my mom, >>>> one last word my mother would want me to put in: guys and guys, get tested. my mother has a family history of colon cancer, and was vigilant about getting her colonscopy tests for years (no, they aren't fun, but you get enough drugs to *almost* make you forget that/) now they say my sister and i should get BOTH lower and upper GI series. i wish this advice had been given to my mother earlier, but there you have it. be healthy, kids. i'll stop now -- i would say before you find out that i'm a softy, but, it's probably too late for that. thank you all for letting me sharing this. it even helps the sadness, a little. P.S.. one of the last things she gave me was a copy of _luminous groove_. it was for my birthday, which was in very late july, but i guess it hadn't been released quite yet, so the gift arrived by post at my parents' house in mid-august. my dad gave me the box and said "it's addressed to you"; i didn't realize it was a birthday gift until i saw what was inside. P.P.S. YES, my family calls me laurie. It may be popular but that doesn't make it any less wrong - or illogical given the word's spelling. I know, I know, I know...language changes, etc. etc. But "nucular" still grates - and whenever I hear it, my estimation of the speaker's intelligence is dramatically revised downward. Weighing in on the "advanced degrees in English" front: I will say that it's overstated to say it's "not knowing what the word is," as if pronunciation is an eternal aspect of a word essential to its identity. It's entirely possible that the accepted pronunciation of the word (any word) will change over time, such that people might be surprised to find that it was pronounced quite differently a hundred years before. For whatever reason, though, some of those changes seem harmless or even salutary, while others come across like fingernails on a chalkboard run through a stack of Marshalls. "Nucular" is the latter, for me and for many others. I think it's quite likely that by now, Bush and some of the other folks in his admin and circle who pronounce it that way actually know how it's pronounced, but mispronounce it intentionally both to curry favor with the redneck I'M IGNINT AN PRUOD! crowd and to annoy those elitist liberals prissily insisting on some high-falutin' Harvard pronunciation. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V16 #708 ********************************
