The songs the Dems pick, on the other hand, simply demonstrate attrocious *taste* in art. Or perhaps a similarly dunderheaded belief that art is only good if it "inspires" in the most insipid sense of the term (you can do it, we can do it, believe in the dream etc. puke). Firstly, I was trying out some new equipment, and suffered from a loose connection. At a number of point one channel dropped out. I have corrected this by patching in the other channel. Where this is during the music it's pretty unnoticable, as the sound is mono out of the PA. During applause it is noticable as the sound changes from stereo to mono where I have patched it. Secondly, this was a really long concert, 3 hours 30 - too long for one of my batteries whcih gave out towards the end of the last song, so the very end is missing. Also due to the length, and the fact there were no breaks, my recorder rolled over to a new file after a couple of hours recording. There is a very slight jump where this happens. Other than that, the sound is really good. No better recording have surfaced, so here it is. I have included some links to information on the event, as well as some photos. Please enjoy, and let me know what you think. If some guy on stage at the corner cafe decides to play "Barracuda" on acoustic guitar, no one's going to confuse him with Heart - and if the Republicans had had some Bob Roberts type playing "Barracuda" on acoustic guitar to introduce Sarah Palin, no one would assume Heart was endorsing the Republicans either. Because regardless of what the laws are, the public imagines that if they hear a band's song in certain "official" contexts, there must have been some sort of permission sought and granted - and, thereby, implicitly, an endorsement being made. I don't think it's appropriate to expect the general public to be familiar with the ins and outs of the various laws that cover songs, recordings, performances, etc. I'm not sure how one would go about this...but it seems clear to me that a political party should not use a recording unless the artist in question has actively allowed its use. Of course, that leads to a sort of slippery slope: some band decides they don't want their songs being used in strip clubs, some other band decides they don't want their songs being played in bars where alcohol is served...and suddenly owners/programmers at such places need to consult a lengthy list of acceptable songs. Not a good idea. However, I think it's reasonably clear that political rallies are quite distinctly political events. We already have laws specific to political events (no campaigning within X feet of a polling place, and there used to be "equal time" regulations for political advertising, etc.), so it wuld seem a very specific exception could be carved out. Incidentally, I'd feel the same if the Democrats had used a song by some diehard Republican country star or something: if that singer was pissed at the usage, that makes sense to me. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 6 Sep 2008 17:10:53 -0700 From: "Jason Brown" Subject: Re: Heart Attacks McCain . . . You can play them all you want. And Heart can complain about it and request that you stop.
