I normally max out at around $30, but recent exceptions include: $100 : Soweto Gospel Choir $ 90 : Dirty Dancing (hey, it was for Catherine's birthday!) $ 50 : Pete Seeger (a charity benefit. We must've cleared $300 if you include dinner and merch) I'm not really a fan of many stadium-rock bands, so I have a definite limit. cheers, Stewart ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 2008 20:32:56 -0500 From: michael wells Subject: Re: what do you all consider expensive? I think like Quail, my decision making process goes through some sort of nebulous matrix that includes fandom, quality of stage show, and rarity modified by current state of the performer and cash on hand. I have paid $100 to see Rush, but passed on $87 for them on this tour. I spent more than that in inflation-adjusted dollars for Bowie's "Glass Spider" tour in the late 80's, about the same for David Gilmour last year (the former I would do again, the latter no chance). I would (and did) pay any amount at any time to see Stevie Ray Vaughan when he was alive, but won't pay for Lollapallooza any more. But it does seem that the number of people asking top dollar has increased dramatically, while the quality of shows has not; it would have to be something pretty remarkable to get me to hit the C note again. I'm just much happier seeing a good artist in a small venue than a great one in a big hall (classical performers aside). Of course this does not include the house concert project, which means I get to see them in my living room ;) Michael ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 Jul 2008 12:03:51 -0700 From: JBJ Subject: Re: what do you all consider expensive? I paid $46 + $10 in anal-raping (read: ticketmaster fees) to see Sting's head on a Jumbotron last Friday night. I knew in my heart of hearts that I shouldn't do it, but I'd never seen The Police live, and figured I wouldn't be able to ever again. We got there so late as to completely miss the opening act, which was Elvis Costello!! Who knew that he'd go on at the time listed on my ticket?? Everywhere else I go, the show starts 30-45 minutes late. (I've never seen Elvis Costello in concert either). Note to self: skip any show that involves video screens. We couldn't verify (even with binoculars) that we were seeing The Police live and not some lip-synching body doubles. B I paid $55 for a VIP seat and ended up front and center, practically sitting onstage. B Set went something like this (well, exactly like this): Museum Of Sex I'm Only You I Got The Hots Balloon Man One Long Pair Of Eyes English Girl Born On The Wind Trilobite Saturday Groovers Full Moon In My Soul Madonna Of The Wasps Oceanside Creeped Out Wreck Of The Arthur Lee Only The Stones Remain - ----------- My Wife And My Dead Wife Queen Elvis* Ole Tarantula *apparently, "Victorian Squid" was on Robyn's setlist, but someone yelled out for "Queen Elvis" and Robyn said "Sure," much to the chagrin of my friend Mandy, who dressed up as a Victorian Squid for Halloween (and for some reason doesn't like "Queen Elvis.") It was a really relaxed atmosphere, and I really enjoyed the breadth of catalogue that was touched upon, and especially "One Long Pair Of Eyes," "Madonna of the Wasps" and "Wreck Of The Arthur Lee." B And it wouldn't have been the night of a Robyn Hitchcock show without something out of the ordinary happening - this time, a phone call from my mom to tell me I was an uncle three weeks early. Elsewhere in Robyn/Fall crossover cover news, I've decided that the easy answer is that Robyn should cover "Solicitor in Studio" while The Fall does "Listening to the Higsons", because they can do them at the same time with little difficulty other than a mismatched chorus or two. Anyone with mashup skills, come and have a go. Interestingly (?) neither Norwich nor East Grinstead have ever been mentioned in a Fall song... but they do have Basingstoke covered (as well as Cambridge, America, San Francisco, Norway, probably a few other Robyn-lyric-immortalized places) as seen here: http://z1.invisionfree.com/forums/thefall/index.php?showtopic=1793 - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2008 00:18:22 -0500 From: "Brian Huddell" Subject: RE: Tech Q > hey, > so, back from vacation, and i notice my hard drive is acting a bit > strangely: it hangs for about three-quarters of a second every five > minutes > or so. is this thing beginning the crashing phase of its life-span? > i've > been using it for about five-and-a-half years. Hey, So yeah, there's exactly a 100% chance that your hard drive will fail, as you've already been told, so back that puppy up. This applies equally to a drive that you just purchased and doesn't seem to be doing anything interesting at the moment. Same 100% failure rate applies to the new drive, because life is pain. But to answer your question, nothing you describe points especially to a failing hard drive. In fact, from your description of the symptom I'd first want to rule out something going on in the environment, i.e. an application or a process that is polling the drive at a regular interval. I assume you're running a fiber-rich vegan OS so I can't really guide you on the specific steps, but do what you can to eliminate unnecessary startup processes and see if that doesn't help. Certainly run whatever disk diag tools you have, and most importantly, take note of any new *noises* you hear coming from the drive. Noise is your bestest truest indication of a failing drive, barring some kind of diag error. Sadly, the drive is just some spinning plates in a metal box, so it doesn't know what sort of environment it's stuck in -- all it can do is spin and whine a bit if the plates start rubbing against stuff. Seriously, if you want to email me some details about your system I'd be glad to try to offer some diagnostic steps. In the meantime try sweet talk - -- even in Windows that shit can work wonders. +b ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2008 07:06:24 +0000 From: Michael Sweeney Subject: Re: what do you all consider expensive? ...While I guess I'd want tix to be as affordable as possible, especially lately for me -- AND I can still sadly and mistily recall not being able to come up with (I believe it was) not even 20 bucks in about '89 or '90 for what would've been my first RH&TE show at Lounge Ax -- but I can honestly say I'd pay about anything to see my top faves, Robyn and Lindsey B., at this point. (PLUS, I was close to trying to sell anything I could to try and raise the dough to go see Lou's "Berlin" show in Europe...but was too pressed by time to fully launch that likely pitiable project...) In fact, I can recall attending a Robyn show at the nearby (just around the corner from me) Park West Theatre, which just seats 750 (and which wasn't filled), and thinking that the $20 tickets (which, that time, I COULD raise in time) must've meant merely a mid-thousands night for RH (after the house cost and all the expenses), which struck me as way too low for the man... Actually that wasn't the case for me. I was close enough to the stage to be able to actually see them, and the video screens were only a bonus in order to see close-ups. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jul 2008 07:21:49 -0400 From: "Stewart C. I've seen Robyn roughly 50 or so times over the years, starting in 1988, and I think that the last two nights at The Turning Point were the best shows I've ever seen him do. He seemed to be having a much better time than he did in Ridgewood on Saturday and the crowd was so much better as well (no frat boys calling out stupid shit like at Blend). I took the bus up from the city to hit the shows by myself and quickly started hanging out with a couple of guys that were also outside waiting for the doors to open (fan geeks unite!) and that was pretty much the mood and nature of the whole night for each show. A great, warm and respectful audience in an intimate space enjoying a great performance, and there was even a celebrity sighting as Jonathon Demme was in the house with his family and Anne Hathaway (?!?!?!?). Hathaway was overheard outside going crazy about how good the show was, Demme had taken her to the show and she hadn't even heard of Robyn before. I didn't write down the set lists as I was just enjoying it way too much. But over the two nights, only Museum of Sex, Glass Hotel and Ole! Tarantula were repeated. Night one included a great rendition of The Ghost Ship and a fantastic Only The Stones Remain. Soft Boys were represented the second night by Mr. Kennedy and he did some of my all- time favrite songs with Queen Elvis, One Long Pair Of Eyes and Beautiful Girl. Great nights. Great shows. Great people. Great venue, my first time at The Turning Point. I know the shows were taped by a guy who posts on DIME, he was sitting right by me. He said the first night sounds great and he grabbed the same spot for the second night, so I would think that one will turn out great as well. Keep your eyes out for them. - ----- End forwarded message ----- ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V16 #659 ********************************
