The first was a clip from Traffic's "Light Up or Leave Me Alone". It's the second break right before Capaldi comes in with "Oh! Spending my bread like it grows on a tree..." Nice repeating riff there. The other is just the beginning of Dick Dale's "Nitro". I've got two custom rings on my phone: The main riff from Stephen Malkmus' "The Hook" (take the first 14 seconds or so and loop accordingly), and The Minutemen's "Corona". Robinsons wasn't too bad in the overall scheme of things. > WJ was also mostly responsible > for the Robots flick, which is great if you can tolerate Robin Williams. That one was alright, although "Happy Feet" hit the "Minimize Williams" button a lot more efficiently. On a lot of these heavily-personality-based CGI things, the personality has come to really matter. "Horton Hears a Who" was really good design-wise but almost unwatchable Jim Carrey-wise (and actually represented the moment when I decided that I simply can't stand Carrey under any circumstances... yes, late in the game, I know), whereas "Kung Fu Panda" and its heavy dose of Jack Black didn't bug me at all; it was actually the most tolerable Dreamworks CGI feature evar. Every single Shrek movie remains godawful, but that's not solely down to Mike Meyers... it's just a broken premise, and weak design that never seems to get better no matter how much money they throw at it. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Jul 2008 20:09:22 -0400 (EDT) From: "Danny Lieberman" Subject: reap Boingboing is reporting that Thomas Disch died by suicide on July 4th http://www.boingboing.net/2008/07/06/rip-thomas-m-disch.html http://nielsenhayden.com/makinglight/archives/010413.html ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 6 Jul 2008 17:40:47 -0700 From: Rex Subject: Re: self-referential, linctus On Sat, Jul 5, 2008 at 8:38 PM, Steve Schiavo wrote: > On Jul 5, 2008, at 9:55 PM, Rex wrote: > > "Bolt" is apparently the titular a movie that my kids really want to see >> now, its trailer having shown before "Wall-E". Yes. I tend to think my kids are at least fairly discriminating, but man, they went nuts for the trailer to this thing called "Beverly Hills Chihuahua", which looks... god, all I can say is try to avoid hearing anything more about it beyond this post. It remains to be seen if Pixar can do for Disney what NeXT did for Apple. > And what the hell happened to the Lilo & Stitch guys? Word. I was kind of wondering if they just got kicked downstairs to work on the various TV L&S spinoffs, some of which look passingly nifty, but I think they're all over now. Favourite tones I have annoyed people with: 1) A snippet of the lead out of PF's "Bike". If you cut this just right, it loops the demented laughing duck noise seamlessly. 2) The music from the old C64 game Uridium. Actually, a bunch of those chip tunes work well as ringtones. 3) The Cackle Sisters yodelling. 4) Some tree frogs (which my colleagues are convinced are from Jurassic Park, but are actually from Olivet, MI: Whatever sample you use, you really have to compress the crap out of it to make it punchy enough for a ringer. They were supposed to get some kind of production deal. Stitch lives on, of course. The Fireball shorts have actually started, so maybe it's the real deal.
