I sort of assume this to be a Mark E. Smith tic (he has a few, and it shows up in his handwriting across several decades) but maybe it's actually something in common UK use for all I know, but we certainly don't do it in the US: putting the symbol *after* the number, as in "Shoulder Pads 1#" or "Recovery Kit 2#". We'd read that as "one number" and "two number". I mean, we'd figure out what it meant and all, but it would be perceived as a mistake. Not so much elsewhere? Related to (2), I've been listening to nothing but The Fall for probably a month or so now. I wonder what the world record for doing such a thing is, but having started (and I won't trouble y'all with my own definition of "listening exclusively to" unless asked), I find it difficult to stop. I inevitably will, probably when that new Wire record comes out, but equally probably not before then; the longer I go with it, the more fearful breaking the cycle comes to seem. Now, after a while, one starts to get a certain feel for the opinions and concerns of Mr. Smith. But by that same token, one can't help wishing that he'd express somewhere, in no uncertain terms-- perhaps even in song-- how he feels about the countryside, and the country folk. Alas. I am now actually sort of interested in some of the crap non-real Fall albums out there, if anyone has any recommendations. All I have outsided the "proper" LP's are the Beggars' singles comps (A-sides and B-sides), Seminal Live, the rightly-dreaded Receiver trilogy (got in a box for dirt cheap), and "Past Gone Mad". Maybe a few other boots, but... what am I missing? - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jun 2008 22:53:24 -0700 From: Carrie Galbraith Subject: Re: # (octothorpe realm) On Jun 15, 2008, at 9:08 PM, Rex wrote: > 2) On the whole number-sign side of things... well, it has to do > with The > Fall, of course. Sort of one of those "want to sleep but the brain won't shut down" nights. So - what do you do to tire out your brain to match your body? You guessed it: here are the titles we came up with. Snakes kill a mockingbird. Snakes died with their boots on. Snakes don't eat the daisies. Snakes bother to knock. Snakes about Eve. Snakes in a cold climate. Snakes, actually. Snakes flew over the cuckoo's nest. Snakes on a hot tin roof. Snakes with dirty faces. Snakes heard the owl call my name. Snakes can hear the mermaids singing. Snakes framed Roger Rabbit. The "the" (not to start that again) in front of the freeways thing being LA-specific surprised me, too, way back when; likewise I had a few Bostonian friends who were forever calling the freeways "highways", which to me mean "interstates". Speaking of LA, right now I'm looking out my window at what is still, barely, quite an attractive lake, but is rapidly becoming this: http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-balls10-2008jun10,0,5878575.story So yes, my house is going from "lakefront" to "vast-field-of-black-balls-front" for a few years.
