That happens to me all the time, with the German umlauts and everything ... I even know why it happens. It's demime, a filter designed to keep MIME attachments from Majordomo lists. Unfortunately it converts all text MIME headers from whatever encoding there used to be to US-ASCII. US-ASCII doesn't contain any "funny" characters, so they get mapped to other characters. When we still ran Majordomo at Cologne University I patched demime so that it would always use an encoding with German umlauts, but the real solution would be to upgrade the listserver software. I noticed that some other lists on smoe.org already run under Majordomo 2, which I guess would be able to deal with that. So maybe an upgrade for fegmaniax is in the cards as well ... ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2008 13:16:19 +0000 From: Michael Sweeney Subject: Re: just wondering Lauren asked: >so...who's a lefty?< Handedly? Another noisy Maxwell's crowd, but this time I seem to be closer to the music so it sounds a lot better than the solo show from October 1990. But maybe that's just because the band is louder than Robyn solo... I can't find the original master cassettes for this show so this is sourced from a first gen listening copy that I made for myself. That he would die suddenly on Father's Day weekend (here in the States) while his dad is still alive and his wife and son were on vacation in Europe isn't fitting. His passing bothers me. He's been the host of Meet the Press for as long as I've been politically awake (c.1991?) and he always struck me as an anomaly in the press -- someone who was as close to impartial as you could get. Which ever side of the aisle you came from he asked tough questions. And he came across as more than a bit likable. On a replacement, I'm not too up on my NBC news-types. They might go outside their ranks for a named replacement. Matthews ('45) -- while experienced -- might be a bit old to take over the show. There's Chris Wallace ('47) on Fox. While that's a strike against him he's got the familial pedigree and hasn't been terribly biased in recent memory. Looking at the younger staff members you've got Stone Phillips (can anyone take him seriously?), Couric (ha!), Gumbel (guffaw), and Lauer (who can't even pronounce his own name correctly). Whoever NBC goes with it's going to be a hard job to fill. Sad all the way round. - -f. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2008 21:52:08 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Re: Reap! Well, it's his name, so however he wants to pronounce it is by definition correct. In any case, I doubt he's interested in the demotion. My guess is that Andrea Mitchell and (on the most important news weeks) Tom Brokaw will do most of the guest hosting but no permanent replacement will be named until after the election. For some reason, I think it will be David Gregory. > Whoever NBC goes with it's going to be a hard job to fill. > > Sad all the way round. > > -f. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jun 2008 21:52:33 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: NBC Reap #2 Charlie Jones http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5jGBDZNoq4J0JP8H9G6EpCg3otkQQD919J8L01 ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 14 Jun 2008 00:25:38 -0700 From: "michael wells" Subject: RE: NBC Reap #2 > Subject: NBC Reap #2 Charlie Jones That's the weird thing about notable TV announcers; I haven't heard his name in years (probably since the network lost NFL broadcast rights), but can hear the pitch and timbre of his voice in my head to this day. I'm only hoping that they have woken up now and won't re-enact Cordoba on Monday: during the 1978 World Cup in Argentina, Austria beat Germany at Cordoba for the first time in 47 years and sent them home, along with themselves, because Austria had already been eliminated from the tournament. That game is still talked about in Germany and Austria. On Monday those two team will face one another again, but this time Austria has ea chance to stay in the tournament if they win. Germany only needs a draw, though, so here's hoping ... ;-) Still, if Austria is the better team and wins, I'm fine with that. - -- Sebastian Hagedorn Am alten Stellwerk 22, 50733 Kvln, Germany http://www.uni-koeln.de/~a0620/ "Being just contaminates the void" - Robyn Hitchcock ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V16 #631 ********************************
