Just think of the Statue of Liberty. She's covered with verdigris, which is the green patina associated with oxidized copper. The German word for it is "Gruenspan"; I grew up knowing a ton of people named Greenspan, so I was thrilled when I learned the word "Gruenspan" in German (it must have been in a Thomas Mann novel). I know a lot of ridiculous words in German. However, not having had the opportunity/need to use them in a while has made me forget some of the simpler ones. In a semi-unrelated incident, I noted at _Iron Man_ the other night that there were *two* people in the credits named "Michael Moore" (one had an initial) - who, obviously, were not *the* Michael Moore. So I propose a new game, the Michael Moore Game...which consists solely of finding people named "Michael Moore" (w/ or w/o initials, but this spelling) who are not the well-known large, baseball-cap wearing guy from Flint, Michigan, as listed in the credits of movies. I think that when a Michael Moore is spotted, game-players should shout a distinctive phrase, so that any other audience member familiar with the game will recognize a fellow MMG player. I am open to suggestions as to what this cry should be (although I think we should stay away from things like "Fat-Ass Hypocrite!" or "Insightful Left-Wing Truth-Teller!" - something non-ideological is preferred - and of course, "Fat-Ass Hypocrite!" runs the risk of being misinterpreted, by any fat asses in the audience, as being applied to them. So let's get this game off the ground, shall we? Win valuable prizes!* - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com * Note: there is no connection between the Michael Moore Game and any valuable prizes. First - is it also a principle of diplomacy to refuse to negotiate with a party (which the US had done for quite some time)? Second - in our formerly or fictitiously civilized world, certain acts are presumed off the table as they are/were commonly regarded as crimes against humanity - such as genocide, torture, chemical warfare, and nuclear first strikes. Since we've decided at least some of those things are just hunky-dory so long as they're called by another name, then I suppose it's correct to specify whether or not they're "on the table" - lest anyone misunderstand our intentions. I mean, do we have to specify now, in terms of its on/off table status, whether soldiers will be instructed to rape, eat, and kill babies, say (in that order)? Used to be certain atrocities were assumed to be beyond the pale. Thank you, Mr. Bush, Mr. Cheney, et al.
