"Conversations with the Step (Daughter)" was a spin-off on "Conversations with the Chef", but it kind of backs me into some kind of variant when writing about conversation with my "bio(logical daughter)s". Still, this is no worse than what's happened to the Shakespeare line "mourning becomes Elektra", which was borrowed for the Eugene O'Neill play, punned by Chris Dourridas into "Morning Becomes Eclectic", and then spun off into "Weekend Becomes Eclectic", which is so far from its source as to be unrecognizable. - -Rex, filling digests with inane nonsense and overtime folderol since 1996 (approx) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 May 2008 12:09:09 -0700 From: "kevin studyvin" Subject: Etc. I keep remembering the last time the KITH were in town, when I encountered Bruce McCullough, possibly the world's funniest human, down on 3rd Avenue and was so enthused that I swooped down on him and gave him a huge hug - which I expect probably scared him half to death given the unexpected, inappropriate action and the fact that I'm at least twice his size...but honestly I couldn't help myself. I just love the guy to death and beyond. This will be our first major public event since my little accident the week before Xmas. I'm walking more or less OK for up to an hour a day. Probably in part because Smith's voice is kind of a hard one to harmonize with (which is part of it's charm). There a few b-sides that feature some proper harmonies, but those are almost always Smith singing with himself, though Siouxsie Sioux and the chick from Shelleyan Orphan both showed up on an occasion. (Also, The Cure has never actually had supplemental guys on stage (exempting the few gigs Vince Ely played with them after they had to fire Andy Anderson mid-tour but before Boris Williams was able to join them after being hired), though I suppose that could change with them not having not filled the keyboard slot after firing Roger O'Donnell. > > The Smiths > > Thought so, didn't want to be wrong about it. I guess Johnny did a few harmonies at a few early gigs, but they decided they didn't like how he and Morrissey voices worked together, so they abandoned it. > > New Order > > Maybe it doesn't quite count, but didn't Hook sing some lead vocals > early on (including the first song on their first album)? Pretty much only "Dreams Never End" "Doubts Even Here" and Gillian sang the lead on "Avalanche" on Republic but not really any harmonies for almost all of their career -- Hooky really sang more with Joy Division than New Order. > Definite add, though: Psychedelic Furs. > > Belated ground rules: let's not count duos of the > one-person-does-music, > other-one-sings variety. Sorry, Vince Clarke! Who sang harmonies on his one Depeche Mode record, and did a lead vocal on the second Yazoo record (on a song replaced in the US by "State Farm," and rightly so, actually). So maybe, sorry, David Ball (but not Chris Lowe, since he does some occasional vocals with the Pet Shop Boys, though those are mostly leads on b-sides)?
