There was a not-hugely-successful band in the UK called 'A' (I saw them live in about 1998 along with The Beekeepers and _manBreak [yes, it was a bad year for punctuation] at King Tut's). I believe that A's (only?) album was called "1". Sadly, I can't verify it - you try searching the web for "a band". This one achieves grate factor for not even having MES on it... it is actual solo piano from Julian Nagle with a drum machine beat that almost isn't. You can score bonus points if, as I did, you listen to the entirety of the album (which is not very good) and figure out why this track is called "Jap Kid". Hint: it has to do with the lyrics that MES borrows and sings when this same basic track reappears close to the end of the record under a different title, and it does appear to be an ethnic slur. (The best bits on the record are the covers and "4 1/2 Inch", which starts with YET ANOTHER version of the same piano piece, albeit speeded up and lyricized, and goes on for a good while until the band seems to suddenly remember, "Hey, we're the Fall", at which random point a whole lotta messy bass and crashing stuff obliterates the song in progress and MES just starts screaming shit. That part is pretty cool. The rest of it sort of belongs to what I call the "mixing board set with a blindfold" years.) "Infotainment Scan" is way better than I remembered, though.
