Torrents of that size usually take idiot-long lengths of time for me, for one thing; for another, last time I looked on one of them there usenet thingies, it was crammed full of like 50,000 different versions of crap I didn't like, from sources I don't know where, whereas I know exactly what I'm getting from eMusic at the princely sum of like 39 cents each. The time it might take me to figure out how to find exactly what I want (and not, say, rips from the 1987 version of the same album) would cost me a hell of a lot more than 39 cents per song from a known source. Honestly, I don't understand the enthusiasm for getting every damned thing via usenet. As it is I end up with nearly more music than I have time to listen to, without even trying particularly hard or paying anything. As for the tagging software thing: tags are not going to be able to distinguish between the 2:39 mono version and the 2:39 stereo version of the same title, nor are they going to recognize that the 2:39 stereo version from one album is, in fact, identical (but for two more seconds of silence, or maybe a slower fade) with the 2:41 stereo version from a different album. Or rather, they might - but only if someone else already did, accurately, what I did myself. And as I've complained a zillion times, online tags for song files are obnoxiously inaccurate. Nope: this is a definitely a case of if I want something done right, do it myself. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Apr 2008 22:59:56 -0400 From: "m swedene" Subject: Nick Lowe - April 9, 2008 (DIG AUD) NYC Hitchcock Costello - DIME Come join the fun! I did look for such - but there are, of course, a million Stones sites in the naked innertubes. And ones I did find were kinda useless - I found one of the ones that the mysterious HwyCDRev linked to the other day, for example, and it was damnably complete, with entries like "May 5, 1972 - Keith Richards switches to a new brand of toothpaste - only to recall that he has no actual teeth" - but with albums lacking their own distinct entries with the info I needed. Or, if such were there, the site was poorly designed such that I couldn't quickly find it. In other words, I decided that rather than spend a lot of time digging around for info online when I could do the job myself, I did it myself. But hey - to repeat, I'm certainly willing to save others the effort. Actually, in a week or so when I have time, maybe I'll check in more detail and put it up online for anyone who might care. unless, of course, you actually *enjoyed* the project. i don't think that > *i* would have...but that's, clearly, a matter of to each their own. Well, I enjoyed having the results, if that counts. Then again, I guess I'm weird in what I enjoy. I spent a reasonably large amount of time, for example, chopping up bits and pieces of a Talking Heads song and a Wire song to Frankenstein them together (at my website a week or so back - the usual link).
