At least I think that's (a) what I did and (b) how it's working w/o further complication... Relatedly: about ten years ago, I bought a set of wireless headphones. They worked via radio, essentially...but they were pretty crappy, in that there was an annoying hum and you practically had to hold your head utterly still to get them to keep the sound consistent. So I'm wondering: if you had a set of headphones that could connect to a wireless network, that'd eliminate that hum/static problem (I notice nothing at all along those lines w/the APE). Is such a product manufactured? Because I often listen on phones late at night but hate being tied down by the cable... I'm curious, how so? I love love love the first album, and my only criticism of it is that the songwriting and singing styles are mixed enough from song to song that it sounds like at least two completely different bands (with one of the bands being late-era Beatles - I'm looking at you, "Hands" and "Intimate Secretary"). It's not even really a criticism because I enjoy the variation, but is the new album more cohesive? Damn, they're not coming to Philly. Michael B. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Apr 2008 21:21:39 +0000 From: Michael Sweeney Subject: Hey, lookie -- a music topic! (some RH conent) So...we've sorta covered similar topics (if not exactly this), and, of course, I know there is no singular answer to this...but I'd be interested in others' take on it... I guess, simply put, the query is this: Who -- which artist or group (mostly artist, I suppose, since this is such a reflection of taste as it regards a single artist rather than a collective group) have you once loved, yet whose recent (or late or whatever metric you want to use) work leaves you completely cold? For example, for me, a few people leap instantly to mind -- Macca and Joni. Having not heard all of "Chaos and Creation" or "Memory" multiple times, but having been exposed to nearly all of both (some parts several times), I -- a former big Macca booster who still counts '72's "Ram" and '78's "London Town" as (probably) among my all-time Top 50 faves -- just say, "Meh -- THIS is some sort of return to form? Eh, seems...professional...enough, but...there's no THERE there." Same for Joni's late-period smoky-voiced folk-jazz noodling (as much as I loved "Heijira," with its mix of semi-jazzy stuff). On the other hand -- Robyn, Zimmy, Lindsey Buckingham...now, those I've appreciated throughout the various phases of their careers, and still do. To a lesser degree, also Paul Simon, George Harrison (although lessened with some of the mid-later stuff), Elvis / Declan, Chrissie, Bruce (although my fave period for him will ALWAYS be '75-'80), Lou, and Neil Young. Maybe Joni's was a bit of a stylistic shift, having felt she went as far as she could with the "Blue" / "Ladies of the Canyon" stuff and becoming only interested in putting out the weird-tuning, discordant-sounding stuff (as I said, some of which I liked)...but Macca? He's still doing the same sorta stuff I once liked. And I STILL like their earlier stuff...plus, I came to those at different times in my music-appreciation career (Paul, as a youth with the Fabs then the solo stuff (although I was always much more of a John guy (but fate has spared me discussing even "Double Fantasy" now)); Joni in my late 20s / early 30s), making me think it can't just be me / my taste / the times... I guess the point is...not everyone can produce fascinating. different, interesting music throughout an entire 20, 30, 40-yr career...and so I suppose I oughta be thankful for those who still do (to me RH, Dylan, Lindsey, etc.) rather than be puzzled about those who don't seem to do it for me anymore (add the other Pauls, Weller and Westerberg, to my list...as well as maybe Prince (although, with him -- in the '80s through early '90s, my twin fave along with Robyn -- it might have been more sheer volume and dicking around w/record companies / delivery methods that lost me), Roger Waters, and Billy Joel (checked out probably after "Storm Front"). Anyway...YMMV, etc.; plus here's a few to sprinkle in wherever I forgot: IMHO, IIRC, IMHO, WTF?, IMHO, and "teh." FTW! Wondering if the Vice President were in town, perhaps hunting in my park-side 'hood, I instinctively flinched...but it turned out the guy (who I didn't know or even recognize as one of the other 100+ residents of the bldg) -- who was loading his car in the alley with his GF / wife -- had recognized me from the picture accompanying my recent Time Out Chicago piece (http://www.timeout.com/chicago/articles/home-living/27822/lessee-of-two-evil s) (sorry, tinyURL was inexplicably blocked by the wireless server here at the Panera Bread I'm parking at for a day out) AND had recalled my name. You caught one of them right off the bat-- Paul Westerberg. I think you can add Bob Mould as well. I have never been a big fan of solo Frank Black, either. Still dig all of their early stuff, and would listen to a new Grant Hart record should one appear. Some suggest that the new Mould is pretty good, but nobody I know personally has said much about it. There's also J Mascis, although the Dinosaur reunion record was really quite good-- it just didn't stay with me like the old stuff did. Malkmus. U2 I never judge to have gone especially bad, but my interest in them has waned substantially. That may be because they'd already lost me once (circa "Rattle & Hum") only to come back with their best record evar (I finally had to admit), and that'd be hard to repeat. I despised the last Wilco record and am unlikely to change my opionion of it if for no other reason than out of respect for Gnat. But I don't write the band off completely. I give a band a grace period of two and a half pile-of-crap albums before I give up completely. I think the basics of my musical taste were set so quickly that most of the artists whose records I purchased but have since disavowed date to the first four months or so of my rock and roll listening period-- that brief time when I liked songs that had cool videos (which at the time was understood, for some reason, to include Genesis) before the double whammy of Talking Heads and R.E.M. turned the whole boat around in what must've been a week or two flat. Before that I'd been quite enamored of Sting's "Blue Turtles" record... mortifying, really. Only Peter Gabriel seems to have survived The Winnowing. I'm kinda up on my Personal Musical Taste History because I've just sifted through a lot of old mix cassettes. There are a few artist for whom I went through a major fad, but it didn't stick. I useta love Saint Etienne but I'm not even sure if they exist anymore. And I had a pretty strong Aphex Twin mania for a few years... it burned brightly and then sputtered out like so much yellow calx. I had a noteworthy boner for Cornershop in the mid-'90's, too. I got such a late start on my rockology that many artists were past their prime before I discovered them... Bowie comes to mind. He may have put out some worthy records since 1986... I've heard a few that weren't too bad, but I never found any of them engaging enough to own. But that back catalog is endlessly amazing. Paul Weller kinda fits that description, too. Lou and Dylan have had ups and downs since I started paying attention, so I feel like I can be fairly objective there. And of course my ardour for my personal top ten or eleven artists is eternal, but in each case waxes and wanes over the years... right now, love them as I do, Kristin, Neil, Lucinda and the Fall are in the lunar shadows, with Robyn, Verlaine, Cale and a few potential new suitors ascendant. MBV, as with any immobile object, remains stable. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 8 Apr 2008 15:35:57 -0700 From: Rex Subject: Re: Lowe/Hitchcock Show? Anyone going? I know I've quoted it before, but, srsly-- "Shiny shiny shinyshinyshiny shinybootsofletha... whoa whoa yeah yeah!" And then for contrast you get Cale's vocal on "All Tomorrow's Parties", which if it doesn't break your ass's heart, your ass doesn't have one. In fairness to Mr. Reed, Cale does fuck up the words to "Waiting for the Man", which he's probably sung at least as many times as Lou. Meanwhile, Sterling and Mo are heroic. If I'd had a boy I woulda named him Sterling, just because that'd be a fun thing to explain to a kid, too. - -Rex ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V16 #566 ********************************
