Took a little while to grow; one has to really remember that the lyrical clunkers aren't really that much worse than in days of yore (that is, get used to them) and then you can easily close your eyes and pretend it's the record after "Document". When I listen to it, im my mind's eye the Stipe who's singing these songs has hair. I think it's substantially better than the U2 "comeback" records. Of course, U2 will probably never make a record as bad as "Around the Sun", so it all evens out in the end. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Apr 2008 12:19:09 -0400 From: Steve Talkowski Subject: Re: new album (100% RH) On Apr 1, 2008, at 11:41 PM, Jeff Dwarf wrote: > Too bad they did the two worst songs off Accelerate. eh, I wouldn't exactly call them the worst (of course, you forgot to append IMHO after your comment, but then again we all know that's implied whenever someone proffers up their personal assessment of another's work, right? ;) however, I will make an observation that to my ears and taste, the 2nd half of the album rawks a bit more than the 1st half. Strangely it features a completely different lead (and way the hell better) vocal from the album version. The second was his solo-credited cover of "Hotel Particulier" from the electronica Gainsbourg tribute, on which his sounds like a very poor man indeed's Jarvis Cocker. Just sort of interesting that even when R.E.M. Oh, cool, I'm in on one of these things at last! Okay, here are my Top 5 Avoidance Techniques. 1) Parenting. 2) Not ever intentionally turning on a television. 3) I think both of those shows are off the air anyway, so, basically, remaining in the present as opposed to drifting backwards (or perhaps forward) in time to a period during which the shows are on the air. One would tend to think that no effort need be expended on staying where one is, temporally, but if you're like me you're constantly finding yourself in what you would only a few moments ago have considered the future, and by the same token, not doing anything to move forward at all, which could be construed as traveling into the past, requires, by definition, not the slightest bit of work. So, you know, here we aren't any more, at least for the present moment. 4) Well, that ought to be enough of that. So 5) will be my favorite BSG moment. 5) The freaky-deaky ending to the one with Count Iblis in it on the planet with the fucked up colors. Motherfucker was the devil or some shit. 6) And 7) will be my favorite Buffy moment. 7) The hot girl-on-girl action between Willow and, like, that other girl that was Willow's girlfriend until she got killed. At least I assume there was some of this, and if there is, like at least them making out or something, I would like it. And no, I don't know why men are like this. I really can't think of any evolutionary advantage bestowed by an enjoyment of witnessing lesbian activity. But for whatever reason, it's pretty much, erm, hardwired into our nature, and there's not much point in apologizing for it. 8) Mostly parenting, really. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Apr 2008 22:11:40 -0700 From: "kevin studyvin" Subject: electric mandolin While crusing for info on John Abercrombie's solid-body electric mandolin (I think it's an old Fender) I came accross the following: http://www.emando.com/players/Bonet.htm There's another entry about this Buck guy with a typically unflattering photo... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 2 Apr 2008 22:23:25 -0700 From: "kevin studyvin" Subject: Re: fanboy joss (~95% BSG / ~4% buffy / ~1% angel) > 7) The hot girl-on-girl action between Willow and, like, that other girl > that was Willow's girlfriend until she got killed. These energies attract (and repel, just like magnets). Ergo, your hot girl-on-girl action would tend to generate high levels of yin energy, which would be very attractive to the yang/male. You've actually met some attracted to hot guy-on-guy action? Every woman I have ever queried on the subject has expressed the same sort of non-attraction that I, as a straight guy, experience. Not some--none. And it was not even non-attraction, but actual revulsion. I'm guessing I've had the subject brought up to about 50 women (almost always as a reversal on the guys admitting they'd like to see some hot girl-on-girl action), so I had always thought my sample was large enough that I had a statistically significant result here.
