I grew up in Cherryville, near Walnutport, which is about 100 miles from Philly. I walked down a rural road to the bus stop. On my way home from school, I would help Mrs. Nikisher catch the chickens that would invariably escape from her henhouse. I made out with my first girl in the hayloft of the neighboring barn, went cow-tipping unsuccessfully once or twice, and played as a kid in the idyllic woods behind my house. I say this because I am not a southerner; but being from the woods of PA, I've seen as many guns and confederate flags as any West Virginian; but I don't feel like a northerner, either. At least, my kind are pretty far away from the New England types. Pennsylvania liberals are very different than those in New England -- we are more about labor unions toughs, folk music rustics, and a surprising number of witches. Most of the people I knew came from Pennsylvania Dutch stock. My mom's Irish parents were so ridiculously racist, however, that I assumed that "nigger" just meant the black people you saw on television. It took the German side of the family to tell me the proper term was "colored." There were no black kids in my school. I realize I exaggerated in my previous statement, though -- I did take a few trips to Philadelphia as a kid, I'm sure I saw black people there. In high school, I began traveling to Allentown, which has a sizeable black population, but they weren't, in general, going to see Rush concerts. The first time I ever *met* an actual black person by name was my first week of college. I find it remarkable that I didn't actually turn out as prejudiced as most of my family. I mean, I have the occasional racist thought, like most white people; but for me, I was always fascinated by "the other." I suppose being a science guy, and being a science fiction fan helped a lot. Venomous racism, sexism, and homophobia never made sense to me. I remember finally wondering, once I was old enough, why my Pappy "Reds" hated black people so much. He explained to me that God hadn't finished them yet; but seeing as I didn't believe in God -- or at least, in his Catholic God -- that was a non-starter for me, even as a twelve year old. To address tangentially one of Jill's comments.... I have always been so overly respectful of black culture that it took me years to finally listen to hip hop without feeling guilty that I was another colonizer or appropriator. Oddly, my favorite rap group is Public Enemy. I've always been attracted to revolutionaries; indeed, if I were a black man, I'd undoubtedly be one of the really pissed off black power types. Hell, I'm a WASP heterosexual and I'm pissed off at the Man! To wrap up, I think that of all the many types of white racism, the one I have the most contempt for is the type you see in so-called liberals, particular northerners. That sense of, "We'll fight for you, just stay in your own neighborhoods and don't get too uppity. You'll eventually get your turn." I'm looking at you, Lanny Davis, Geraldine Ferraro, and Mr. & Mrs. Clinton. - --Quail ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Mar 2008 12:28:52 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Re: Frank Rich on the forthcoming disaster 2fs wrote: > On 3/26/08, Benjamin Lukoff wrote: > > Wouldn't that put their own seats in jeopardy > > next election? > It could - then again, since we're talking about an independent > president w/o a party apparatus, it's not as if his supporters > would be aligned to do anything about it. Oddly, my favorite rap group is Public Enemy. That seems pretty normal. When I was in college I went to Mr. Hitchcock and his Musical Egpytians, and ran into maybe ten of my USC classmates. A week later I went to see PE and ran into almost the exact same bunch of people. We thought it was kind of funny at the time, but not *that* odd. But it would be "brave" for me (and a lot of my fellow unenthusiastic Democrat-voters) by definition, because we vote Democratic out of *fear*... fear of a McCain administration, in this instance. So it would be "brave" of us to overcome that fear and use our vote for someone other than the Democrat, but we don't. This is not strictly rational, of course, since our votes don't necessarily mean too much on an individual basis, but the idea that "your vote is your political currency" is pretty deeply ingrained in even those of us who know otherwise. Also, some of us have voted third party before, and we've never stopped getting shit about it. > secondly, all those eligible voters > who'll be staying on home (about 40%) on election day are votes against > the two major parties.
