I am, as most of you know, a major fan of The Fall...but that doesn't prevent me from recognizing the less-than-stellar moments in their absurdly extensive catalog. But I think the only track that's an actual chore for me to get through is... "Antidotes" - the Peel Sessions version. It's 4:59. The Peel Box is weird-- there are instances where lackluster periods in terms of regular output yield some stellar performaces, and others where good album material plays out remarkably shittily. No big surprise, since in all likelihood the lineup turned over completely between the record and the tour. Also and also not really surprisingly, iTunes shows that while THE MARSHALL SUITE contains tracks called "(Jung Nev's) Antidotes" and "Anecdotes & Antitodotes in B# (sic)*", the unmodified title "Antidotes" is unique to the Peel Box. The former is the song that's being attempted on the Peel Box, but the album version is more coherent, at least seems to have actual words, and doesn't inexplicably slow down and die over its duration. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2008 10:23:05 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: Re: most unbearable Fall track On Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 10:15 AM, Rex wrote: > > > On Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 7:27 AM, 2fs wrote: > > > On Fri, Mar 7, 2008 at 9:23 AM, craigie* wrote: > > > > > 400 minutes? > > > > > > > I didn't have the track nearby to check - I just remember it *felt* like > > 400 > > minutes... > > > It's 4:59. > > The Peel Box is weird-- there are instances where lackluster periods in > terms of regular output yield some stellar performaces, and others where > good album material plays out remarkably shittily. Anyway: my quick memory, having listened to nearly the whole thing over the last week or so, is that the first 3 discs are nearly all brilliant. The fourth one has deadly patches, the fifth one's pretty weak (with some exceptions), and the sixth one...first two sessions (including the one w/"Antidote") are meh, (from here I haven't listened recently) the last two are hot (the "Click" band), and I forget the "bonus track" entirely at this point. > > > > -- > > ...Jeff Norman > > The Architectural Dance Society > http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Mar 2008 11:32:51 EST From: HwyCDRrev@aol.com Subject: norman smith articles http://www.seth.com/bio_story18.html http://www.mojo4music.com/blog/2008/03/norman_smith_22_february_1923_1.html **************It's Tax Time! He's supposed to be so funny - but there's not a single fart joke, crotch kick, or large sassy African-American female to be found in his whole apparently-meant-to-be-humorous correspondence. But maybe that's progress and why America is the apple in God's eyes (I don't get that phrase - wouldn't that mean God can't see? But He's all-powerful, so I guess it doesn't matter). I must admit Marx is much funnier than Shakespeare - last semester I had to take a course in him, and the things they called "comedies" weren't even funny at all! Mostly they were chick flicks with to many words - everyone got married in the end, and my teacher thinks that's why their comedies. Of course, you know, she would: chicks - who can figure 'em out. To me, it was first a sort of parody of surfer/stoner slang, used only by people who were parodying same...and (as often happens) it gradually started being used sort of semi-ironically, kind of reflexively - and now I hear it with no sense that it ever could have been anything other than just a term of address.
