But one clear structural element of the song is drawn from Qabbalistic imagery -- the Qabbalistic Tree of Life is even depicted on the album cover. The phrase "Station to Station" echoes the idea of moving from sephirah to sephirah on the Tree of Life; each sephirah is very much like a metaphysical way station. something like a zodiacal sign or a Tarot card in terms of being an aggregate of correspondences. It also calls to mind the catholic idea of the "Stations of the Cross," of course. Two of the sephiroth are actually named in the lyric, "One magical movement from Kether to Malkuth," which Bowie uses to depict a mystical fall from grace, a movement from Kether, the so-called "crown of creation" all the way down to Malkuth, the prison of the material world. Obviously, the song conflates the idea of a Qabbalistic fall from grace with the idea of crucifixion and the imagery of endless train stations. (I am pretty sure "The European Cannon" is another symbol that alludes to both the name of a train, as well as multiple meanings of the word cannon/canon.) Not to mention the more obvious lines touching a cynic falling in love. Bowie himself has remarked that the album came from a very dark place.... I have always found it one of his most painfully autobiographical songs, and I detect a certain element of disingenuous disengagement when he now casually dismisses it as the vaguely inscrutable product of his coke years. And yeah, I know Madonna has ruined Qabbalism, but if you look beyond her New Age appropriations, there's some powerful stuff there. - --Quail ***** The return of the thin white duke Throwing darts in lovers eyes Here are we, one magical moment, such is the stuff From where dreams are woven Bending sound, dredging the ocean, lost in my circle Here am i, flashing no colour Tall in this room overlooking the ocean Here are we, one magical movement from Kether to Malkuth There are you, drive like a demon from station to station The return of the thin white duke, throwing darts in lovers' eyes The return of the thin white duke, throwing darts in lovers' eyes The return of the thin white duke, making sure white stays Once there were mountains on mountains And once there were sunbirds to soar with And once I could never be down Got to keep searching and searching Oh, what will I be believing and who will connect me with love? Damn. And here I thought the line was "from Kiefer to Malkmus" - curious, since Kiefer Sutherland wasn't well known at the time, and Stephen Malkmus was just a little kid. Never underestimate Bowie's precog powers! Yes, I know it's likelier that if Bowie sang "Kiefer" he'd've meant Anselm Kiefer. But it's funnier to imagine him singing about Kiefer Sutherland, so shut up ;-) - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2008 10:59:04 -0800 From: Rex Subject: Re: Station to Station On Feb 19, 2008 9:09 AM, The Great Quail wrote: > It also calls to mind the catholic > idea of the "Stations of the Cross," of course. Synchronicity alert: I don't often have much truck with the word "canon", but just a minute after reading this post, two pieces of music related to the idea simultaneously arrived on my hard drive from completely disparate sources-- one a disc of kid's music from my wife's collection, and the other a mix cassette sent to me by a friend from Illinois in what must have been 1988 (the latter a George Winston riff on the Pachelbel, rather niftily followed by "Surfin' Bird", and then some Flesh for Lulu... fire up the Bearcat, because those were different times). - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 19 Feb 2008 11:28:20 -0800 (PST) From: "Elizabeth Brion" Subject: Re: Jazz pianists >> hey, any jazz-pianist recommendations? > > On the more dissonant side: Cecil Taylor and Matthew Shipp. > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cecil_Taylor > > http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matthew_Shipp Yes, and yes. I'm also a huge Sun Ra fan; on the more traditional side of things, I haven't seen anyone mention Oscar Peterson or Bud Powell, both of whom are fantastic. Going back to the early days, Fats Waller and Earl Hines are favorites of mine. There are a few younger guys I'd highly recommend, mainly Jason Moran, who's one of those people who just sucks the whole of recorded music into his brain and spits it out as his own thing, and who kindly provides MP3s here: http://jasonmoran.com/mp3.html. Brad Mehldau is also wonderful; he's got a heavy, almost classical sound to much of his playing, and if you say he sounds like Bill Evans he will cut you (or at least write a really long essay about it), which I think is important to know up front.
