Manfred Man seems to have mostly avoided this, and came down with a very bad case of the Eighties around 1983 or so. I find the entire thing marginally more listenable if I picture Christopher Walken as the producer, shouting "More world percussion". 2) There's this song, originally by Bo Diddley, "Bring it to Jerome". The chorus goes "All you pretty women, Bring it to my home, You don't have to worry, I won't do you no wrong." and it's pretty much identical, tunewise, to the pre-chorus of Leppo and the Jooves. I'd never heard this before. I'd say that a lot of early Soft Boys stuff (which I've been listening to a lot, thanks to Eddie's crappy, patchy discography) borrows pretty obviously from certain sources...but always transforming it and adding to it in ways that make it anything but a ripoff or cheap copy. IN particular, a lot of older R&B, blues, or rock'n'roll numbers are mucked up. Hearing their version of "Mystery Train" next to "Fatman's Son" is one example: of course, "Mystery Train" didn't have fourteen different sections, nor was it mostly in 7/8 time. I think they were inspired in this by Captain Beefheart - who of course took a lot of old blues notions and warped them pretty seriously. There's a record out there called something like "Sources of the Captain" - it presents the original blues songs that Beefheart messed around with. From the NPR site: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=18484452 Fresh Air from WHYY, January 29, 2008 - Old friends Mick Jones, former lead guitarist of The Clash, and Tony James, once of the Billy Idol-fronted Generation X, have teamed up in a band called Carbon/Silicon. Carbon/Silicon isn't yet as well known as the bands the two co-founders came from, or even the bands the other band members once played in. Leo Williams played bass with Jones in Big Audio Dynamite, and Dominic Greensmith was the drummer for British rock group Reef. But the group's approach to the internet has gained them widespread popularity. James and Jones began making their songs available on their web site as free downloads in the summer of 2004, and encouraged their fans to record them when they played live and pass those around as well. They've just put out their first full length CD, called The Last Post, but they pledge to keep giving songs away on the internet as well. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2008 14:33:56 -0600 From: 2fs Subject: Re: Bo and the Jooves On Jan 29, 2008 1:30 PM, Rex wrote: > > > On Jan 29, 2008 10:54 AM, 2fs wrote: > > > > > I think they were inspired in this by Captain Beefheart - who of course > > took a lot of old blues notions and warped them pretty seriously. > > > > And of course John Cale, whose version of "Heartbreak Hotel" they did as a > cover of a cover (with extra pus added, no charge). > But it was just - he deserved it! > -- > > ...Jeff Norman > > The Architectural Dance Society > http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2008 10:32:49 -0500 (EST) From: djini@voicenet.com Subject: Re: puppet Spike Carrie wrote: > ... and there's a Puppet Spike too (for some reason...) I myself really want this DRD plush, so I can rant wildly, Crichton-style. http://www.toyvault.com/farscapeplush/index.html Jeanne ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 29 Jan 2008 13:42:46 -0800 From: Rex Subject: Re: Bo and the Jooves On Jan 29, 2008 12:33 PM, 2fs wrote: > On Jan 29, 2008 1:30 PM, Rex wrote: > > > > > > > On Jan 29, 2008 10:54 AM, 2fs wrote: > > > > > > > > I think they were inspired in this by Captain Beefheart - who of > > > course took a lot of old blues notions and warped them pretty seriously. > > > > > > > And of course John Cale, whose version of "Heartbreak Hotel" they did as > > a cover of a cover (with extra pus added, no charge). > > > > But it was just - he deserved it! > > Well, it's not so much that it was just... it's just that it wasn't *unjust*. Nah, they admitted to nicking that from Killing Joke "80s." I've always thought that "I Wanna Destroy You" would spazzily segue pretty naturally into "Territorial Pissings" though.
