This was interesting and also, from where I sit, quite very horrid. This may be a telling observation, or it may be me bringing my own baggage to the story, but... when I started reading this, I assumed that *Wareham had now split up with Phillips* and was going to recount *that* painful experience, the whole relationship from start to finish. And honestly, I was well down the third page before I realized that the divorce being described was "just" the first one. He writes about Britta not at all like someone with whom he's currently in love, but someone with whom he once had a powerful, all-consuming obsession; I can glean nothing from the article about how their relationship works in the now. Maybe that's a function of needing to tell the story in a "you are there" way. Or maybe I'm totally wrong. The vibe I get is that of someone trying to pin down a great sadness in his past, not quite aware that he's broadcasting a strong suggestion that said sadness is very much ongoing. Is this... just me? Luna was certainly a fantastic band; they made several records which, when I hear them, I recognize as superior in many ways to albums by other lesser bands with which I've spent far more time. And the reason for that is completely the fact that they were, to me, forever in the shadow of Galaxie 500, who seemed to me less a band than an act of God. That said, I miss them now. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2008 16:46:33 -0800 From: "michael wells" Subject: RE: Fleece, 24th January 2008 Mike, thanks for the great review! At any rate, I didn't get any sort of feeling that there was any weirdness in his current marriage...somehow, I realized that wasn't (going to be) the case somewhere in the first couple of paragraphs. But as I said, I've never been where he's been... You, perhaps, have been closer, in that you did have to suffer through one of your marriages breaking up. I suppose the hardest thing (which he doesn't directly address) is trying to answer: is my marriage ending because I'm falling for this woman, or am I falling for this woman because my marriage is ending? It's clear enough that, in retrospect at least, Wareham knew his first marriage wasn't working well (and of course the need for a musician to be on the road a lot doesn't help...), and it's entirely possible that, tempted though he might have been, he might not have bitten had he thought he could save his existing marriage. Don't know - but I think it's a good example of how people outside a relationship shouldn't judge it. I remember some folks, hearing that Wareham and Phillips had become a couple in addition to musical collaborators, were pissed off at one or both of them (knowing that DW had been married) - well, it's never that simple, is it. My own belief is that it's actually rare that anyone leaves a marriage solely for an attractive other: there's always other problems in the relationship that facilitate (if only emotionally) getting together with that other person. To the rest of the world, it might look like someone left their spouse for a better-looking partner - but that might have been the least of the reasons in actuality. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 26 Jan 2008 00:41:28 +0100 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Oh to be in LA Enter for an opportunity to Attend Private Show in Los Angeles Aimeemann.com and The Artists Den is pleased to offer the chance to attend an intimate, invitation-only performance by Aimee Mann at a secret location in Los Angeles on February 7. True enough, as it goes, but when one writes about the relationship(s) in a public form-- which songwriters do obliquely anyways, and Wareham is doing more literally here-- one knows that one is going to be judged based on one's portrayal of oneself. Wareham judges himself pretty harshly in places, of course, and does a fair amount of his own digging at the roots of his issues. Really, my attention to the piece was pretty-half-assed at first, but it kind of roped me in... if I'd been paying more attention at first, I probably would have realized that Wareham and Phillips were still together, and read it as having a completely diffferent tone. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Jan 2008 17:04:10 -0800 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: Dean writes about Britta On Jan 25, 2008, at 2:30 PM, Rex wrote: > when I started reading this, I assumed that *Wareham > had now split up with Phillips* and was going to recount *that* > painful > experience, the whole relationship from start to finish. That's how I approached it as well. It wasn't until I got halfway through the third page that I figured he and Britta were still happily together and this was an excerpt from a longer work. I had been thinking about getting a Wii, but when I got a Sony HD TV set recently, I realized that I needed something to get actual HD with. Last but not least, my DVD player has been acting up lately. So having a device to replace it seemed a good idea. The Xbox 360 was a non-starter, so I got a PS3 today. I haven't actually played anything yet, because my first order of business was making it work as MediaRenderer. That works surprisingly well. I installed MediaTomb on my G5, followed some hints on the website and bingo! The only thing that isn't yet working so far is the Bluetooth remote. I can't get it to register on the PS3.
