I have seen advertised, at a couple of the few independent CD stores that still exist, a machine which will polish (or something) your CD for you, to allow CDs that are too scratched to play properly to be recovered. Any opinions on this device? I know it works, but if I used it on an out-of-print unplayable CD would collectors be appalled? It only costs $3 or something like that. My CD plays like new, but it certainly looks "repaired". My wife used to be good friends with Carlene... she has a copy of one of those Nick Lowe records autographed to her with some really salty language (can't recall offhand if the word in question is among them). If you like your comic historical novels with accuracy (think Aubrey & Maturin, but with more fart gags), try Flashman -- apparently the SAS used them for tactical analysis of former colonial conflicts in Afghanistan. Dunno if you'd want to claim any kin to the reivers. They were nasty bastards - think a mix of Quantrill's raiders and mujaheddin. No wonder the Romans dubbed the borderers "scoti" - bandits. Yeah, I mean why would _June_ write a song about that? "I'm not tempted to write a song about George W. Bush. I couldn't figure out what sort of song I would write. That's the problem: I don't want to satirize George Bush and his puppeteers, I want to vaporize them." -- Tom Lehrer "The eyes are the groin of the head." -- Dwight Schrute . ____________________________________________________________________________________ Looking for last minute shopping deals? I saw the documentary in the theaters when it was aired - really enjoyed the insight into Apocolypse Now. I'm waiting for The Inner Circle to come out on DVD. A 1991 film about Stalin's pre-WWII regime from the eyes of his projectionist. Excellent film, very bleak, very forgotten. DVD of the moment - Performance.
