Barbara Soutar Victoria, BC ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2007 14:00:51 +0000 From: Michael Sweeney Subject: Kimberly says "Happy Birthday!"...and thanks for the royalty! ...So, I was in Walgreen's yesterday, and noticed a special rack of "musical greeting cards" (where, after you pull an activation tab, it plays a certain song when opened). I had noticed them before (and, of course, was not there for the cards -- I was actually there to price a vat lot of "Stink Like Shania" perfume -- finally a media-driven scent that's even classier than "Forever Krystle" or "Carrington"!)), and, as before, browsed the available songs fer a laff... Shouldn't have been a surprise, but, of course, among pop crap and country pap, there was a sunny-looking card featuring "Walking on Sunshine." I didn't play it (didn't feel enough curiosity to start the assumed-limited-battery clock on a (I think) $3.95 product), but noticed the copyright on the back said "Kimberly Rew" without mention of Katrina and the Waves (so, I'm assuming it must be a cover or an instrumental version). ...And, of course, along with the movie trailers and diaper ads and whatever other uses, I'm glad that Kimberly is making money -- but, once again, makes me ponder the fact that he has penned 1 for sure (and a 2nd quite possible, with "...Liverpool") song that everyone knows, while, when I try to explain Robyn to people, I have to stoop to "Balloon Man," which, 8 of 10 times (to be generous, probably) gets returned blank stares... Anyway -- I'd rather give cards featuring "I Wanna Destory You" or "I Wanna Go Backwards" (good for teasing us rapidly-aging hipsters) or "She Doesn't Exist" (for condolences or break-ups?) or even (straightforward; sincerely) "I Feel Beautiful." Maybe even "Dark Princess" or "I Something You." "Insect Mother" for Mother's Day? Oh --of course: "My Wife and My Dead Wife." ("Here you go, honey -- happy anniversary and glad you're not dead!") Any other suggested RH singing greeting card suggestions? Michael "'Man Who Invented Himself' for the birth of a son?" This was recorded from the center of the back row, which really only ended up being about row six, or something very close. I think it turned out to our advantage, as if we we had been closer to the stage, we might have picked up more guitar and less vocals, as the P.A. was suspended from the ceiling. That room generally has a sweet sound, no matter where you are. Also, this was a test drive for a new pair of cardiods made by Chris Church, which have since been dubbed the ST-11 series. I recorded the opening set by Sean Nelson, with the pre-amp switched to +20dB (well, it was an acoustic show after all), and that seemed to run a bit hot (although shockingly clear), so I recorded Robyn's set with the pre-amp switched to -20dB. I think about the only noticeable difference between the two is that some of Robyn's comments were significantly quieter, so I tried to gently boost some of those areas in a way I hoped would blend naturally with everything else. I didn't tamper with the music at all. In retrospect, I probably could have had the pre-amp at +20dB for Robyn's set, and it would have been fine, but at the time, I didn't want to risk it. I'm still quite happy with the results. I've given copies of this to both Robyn and Sean, but haven't traded it with anyone else, so I do hope everyone respects the rights of the artists, and doesn't sell it on eBay or something. If that happens, everyone will know it came from here, and that will also insure I don't ever upload anything else. I know I have at least a few things some of you want, so let's see if we can invoke the rules of good karma, okay? So, ummm....this being my first upload here and all, we'll see how this works out. If it goes well, I'll follow it up with the Sean Nelson set as soon as it looks like this has picked up some other seeders. Enjoy! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Nov 2007 12:53:10 -0500 From: FSThomas Subject: Re: Yer all a bright bunch ... Kimberly must have earned a tidy sum over the years from "Walking on Sunshine." He might be geeting more revenue from "Liverpool" soon, as the Bangles - All Over The Place is being reissued in January. Not sure if it will be remastered with bonus cuts or what. It would be nice though if the Bangles ep from 1982 was included on it. I keep being surprised by how much I like the whole album, one of Uncle Robbie's finest hours in my book beyond a doubt. I know he's expressed some disappointment that Spooked didn't generate the excitement O.T. did, but jeez - sonically it's like the difference between John Wesley Harding and Revolver. One of them is just naturally more fun than the other, due to its broader instrumental palette if nothing else. I was immediately taken by it, then checked myself to make sure it wasn't sort of RH Boilerplate, exciting for the rock-and-jangle alone (cf. "Oceanside", maybe)... but I still keep wanting to listen to it loudly over and over again, and sometimes do. It has teh goodz as a song, too... it does what it does well enough for a whole song before you even get to the "one for the girl" bit, which is like bonus goodness. HEY! I JUST REMEMBERED! The overused expression that was starting to bug me (cf. "loves me some"). It's the overused of the phrase "(adjective)-y goodness" with a cheekily incongruous adjective, as in 'Hitchcock-y goodnes" or "toxic-y goodness", like an advertising slogan. Feels like something that originated either with Letterman or The Simpsons, but is suddenly omnipresent. > I know he's expressed some disappointment that Spooked didn't generate the > excitement O.T. did, but jeez - sonically it's like the difference between > John Wesley Harding and Revolver. I liked and still like "Spooked" and said as much when it came out, and I don't think most of its detractors dislike it for being non-rock (because I trust RH fans not to be lame like that, and I think most of us have an acoustic-ish record on our favorites list). When _Spooked_ came out, I saw it as a bit of a comeback, after the somewhat disappointing _Luxor_ and the mostly ho-hum _Robyn Sings_ (not to mention that that one was, of course, not his songs). I still feel that way. But _OT_ is pretty much a return to full-fledged awesomosity. _Spooked_ is sort of unusual in his catalog in being nearly a collaboration but not with the usual suspects. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Nov 2007 10:38:29 +1300 From: grutness@slingshot.co.nz Subject: Re: Yer all a bright bunch, plus >grutness@slingshot.co.nz wrote: >> >"Galf Knip" would be a pretty cool name for an album, actually. >> >"451", however, sounds too Bradbury... or perhaps even Moore.... >> >> And remember the reason why XTC originally called themselves Star >> Park... > >Swindon's leading Korean stripper? >... I believe that was in the season 1 episode Nightmares. At the beginning of one of his nightmare experiences, Xander finds a candy bar on the floor and gloats "Someone else's loss is my chocolatey goodness." (And then the killer clown attacks.) I have a strong feeling that the phrase was riffing on an already-existing advertising slogan, but I don't actually know what slogan that might be. > I'm pretty sure it had nothing to do with Spike, shirt > or no. Nope, this was pre-Spike. But the same episode features Xander in his underwear, for those interested in such things. I want a greeting card that plays "Where Are the Prawns." I don't know or care what occasion the card would celebrate. I just think it would be neat. - --Chris ______________________________________________________________________ Christopher Gross On the Internet, nobody knows I'm a dog. chrisg@gwu.edu ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V16 #413 ********************************
