Really. In one fell swoop they cast their overproduced single as "Glass Onion", which it wasn't, themselves as the Beatles, which they weren't, and "Seether" as "I Am the Walrus", which holy shit was it not. The problem is that if Veruca Salt = The Beatles, then there is no band with whom you could even compare, say, the Breeders, because there is no such thing as a band that is as far superior to the Beatles as the Breeders are to Veruca Salt. And then when you consider that, given this posited Continuum of Band Quality, you would still have to account for the *actual* Beatles who were more betterer than any of them, then you have to start making up really weird stuff... who does God worship, basically... By this, I'm figuring you mean ``The Forgotten Arm'' and the album (oh, my dear brain) before that - her 4th solo album (not counting the soundtrack to ``Magnolia'') with the blue cover that's a drawing with telephone towers or maybe it's just stars on it. I get the feeling that a lot of people have been disappointed with her work after ``Bachelor No. 2'' and ``Magnolia.'' I really love that 4th album, but it took me a long time to fall for it. The tone of it is incredibly narrow, and I think it makes the album boring in a way that's hard to get past (passed?) It's kind of like the anger and active cynicism which she had on her earlier albums has channeled its way into a depression that makes the album singular and rather passive. But it's also what makes the album so strong. She rather says nothing and so much at the same time. The whole album can sort of be summed up in the final track (``It's Not''), but the way the entire thing works to get to that point is rather quietly brilliant. I feel somewhat the same about ``The Forgotten Arm'' and I think it's more listenable, mostly because the melodies are peppier. But I haven't listened to it all that much. I imagine part of what will determine your future listening pleasure is whether she and Mr. Penn stay together (I haven't heard anything they indicate that they won't) (well, believing her when she indicates that her songs have a narrator who's not her (she?)) As aside, I love Ms. Aimee, and I'm sad to see she's skipping Philadelphia during her Christmas tour. Helps to have the flu. next time i complain about the nearly bizarre lack of mention of mr. cohen on feglist, carrie is officially exempt. > Wow. And focus on the Wainwrights, many of you have raved over them, > and I never listened. But LC says they are responsible for his > resurgence. > > Anyway, great biopic of a magnificent human being, poet, singer, > songwriter. > > And bonus - Mr. Cave... i saw an *.avi of a bbc production that was probably torrented somewhere. i think it was filmed on occasion of release of the ``heather'' album. or his 70th birthday. or both. at any rate, (the young) mr. wainwright was interviewed for that, i think mr. cave showed up as well, and it turns out ian mccullough (sp) of echo and the bunnymen is a big fan as well. i guess my point is that i was kind of surprised who came out of the leonard-cohen-fan closet. on the other hand, you really have to have a fucking screw loose not to be a fan of his. wainwright's version of ``hallujah'' is my favourite. it's kind of a shame that mr. cohen doesn't do proper justice to his own song. it is such a heartachingly beautiful song. if i had to narrow down what i really believe to just a few sentences, i imagine one of them would be a line from that song. now that i'm reminded of this documentary, i raised its position to #3 on the netq. speaking of cohens(-ish), i broke down and watch the coen brothers on charlie rose. they and their cast were captivating as always. the boys both got haircuts since i last saw them interviewed. they sure clean up nice. btw, which one is married to francis mcdormand? and please say his hair colour (the dark-haired coen or the red-haired coen) because if i could keep their names straight, i wouldn't need to ask. xo - -- - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- "People with opinions just go around bothering one another." - The Buddha ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V16 #402 ********************************
