I'm sure this has been a thread before, so I've almost certainly said this before, but if "The Black Crow Knows" isn't specifically designed to be covered by Jethro Tull, I don't know what is. Other possibles: Richard Thompson - Never stop bleeding The Byrds - Sleeping knights of Jesus Lou Reed - Captain Dry (mind you, of all people, Status Quo could probably do this justice) that'll do - it's difficult to come up with these while listening to Nina Simone... I don't have any really great ideas right now, but hey... whatever happened to the "real" RH tribute that was supposed to come out? I remember that Tanya Donnelly was covering "Sweet Ghost of Light"... hell, I'd pony up just for that. I probably don't know enough "contemporary" artists to suggest too many viable covers, but it does strike me that Arcade Fire could probably do pretty good by "Underwater Moonlight". Someone should damned well do "The President"... Not exactly contemporary, but...I have this arrangement in mind for "Sounds Great When You're Dead" that'd be ideal for ZZ Top. Stop vomiting. You take that squiggly little chromatic lick, chunk it up by paralleling fifths (but dropping the first and fourth beats, so you get durr-durr-durr durr-durr-durr). The "bip-bip...duh-duh dutt" bit, which already kinda bluesy, becomes a slide guitar lick. Kind of a slinky beat, open and close the hi-hat on the second and sixth eighth notes. (This is straight eights, not swung.) Uh-anyway, so that's the verse. Vocals are that kinda pinched, transistor-radio-y sound on the verses. The bit into the chorus (where it modulates) turns into your classic open fifth eighth-note thing with the top note going to the sixth on, say, the third beat of the first four and mebbe the second of the second four. Put a slide lead over that, or maybe some piano. I can hear this in my head. I'd let you all tune in, but I'm not sure what's the frequency, Kenneth. (Note: this is the same frequency that has an arrangement of "Roundabout" in the style of "Pump It Up" playing, so...uh, proceed with caution) - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 12 Nov 2007 22:25:20 -0800 From: Rex Subject: Re: Robyn covered... (snip) I can totally see this. It's no crazier than the brilliant Knack-ified version of "Clean Steve" on the tribute albums. Yes to all of the above. I think Kate Rusby would do a nice job covering "Ghost Ships". Michael B. I've not thought about it for a while, but I remember thinking when that was played on Live 105 a lot that someone (and Robyn would be as good a person to do it as anyone) should do a folky version of "Black Metallic."
