Would anyfeg attending upcoming shows be kind enough to, perhaps, ask Robyn what the song's title is? I like them, but maybe not as much as I should, given that this area is Waffle Country. There exist two specialties nearby that differ only in one letter: Belgische Waffeln and Bergische Waffeln. The former are from Belgium: The latter are from the "Bergisches Land" area: And while I'm at it: Bergische Waffeln are part of the Bergische Kaffeetafel, which is a beauty to behold (and consume). I've found this Englisch description on a tourism site: "The "Bergische Kaffeetafel" is the best-known speciality of the Bergisches Land. This "coffee drinking with everything to go with it" is hearty rather than sweet. Instead of cakes and biscuits, here you will find "Hefeblatz" with raisins, black and brown bread with honey or sugar beet syrup, cheese, sausage and ham, Rodon ?? cake, milk pudding with sugar and cinnamon as well as fresh waffles with hot sour cherries. The main thing is - plenty of it! True to style, the coffee should come from the "DrC6ppelminna, a pewter coffee pot with a small tap." Ah, Flickr to the rescue: OK, now I really should get back to work, but I'll leave you with this list of ingredients: What do we need? * farmerB4s white butter bread with and without raisins * dark rye bread * mixed-grain bread * Bergische butter waffles * hot morellos * a brodonb cake * GrandmaB4s apple cake * milk rice with sugar and cinnamon * raw and cooked ham * liver sausage and black pudding * cheese * two different kinds of marmelade * butter * 2 cups of tea or coffee per person and * last but not least - a glass of Bergischer schnapps ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2007 10:58:34 -0500 From: "Bachman, Michael" Subject: RE: Shank Hall 11-2-07 Jeff wrote: >I did notice Ms. Nicks - yeesh. The other "characters" were a couple-few guys at the bar who didn't quite have down the concept that at a quiet, acoustic show, in fact when you're speaking in a very loud voice to your buddy, the whole damned place can hear you. One of the bartenders actually shushed one of them: something to the effect of "I know it's just the opening act [sorry, Sean - if you're lurking here] but people are trying to listen to the show, so keep your voice down." We were actually perfectly content sitting at the bar watching the show: the venue's not big, the sound was fine, the sightlines excellent - but I didn't want to deal with Mr. Yappy, so we went off to the side...with the dreaded beer-toppling moulding lying in wait. Eddie Tewes and I made the choice of trying to shush the obnoxious "characters" during an opening act, and ran the risk of being tossed by Nazi security types who noticed only us, as I was almost tossed in November of 1999 during the opening Departure Lounge set at the Robyn and The Rock Armada show at The Magic Bag in Ferndale, MI. Fortunately Eddie, Nuppy, his guitarist buddy Mike, and Carissa came to my defense (we were all at the same table) as did others in tables nearby. It was a close call and I'll never do it again. At least metaphorically. It seems kind of odd that it's never happened. Although Thompson's a few years older, their backgrounds and musical interests seem very similar. I can almost imagine, though, that Robyn might feel like any guitarist might feel thinking about collaborating with Richard Thompson: sheer, unyielding fear, terror, panic, and an acute sense of unworthiness. You know, like asking to play one-on-one with Michael Jordan or something. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2007 09:56:56 -0800 From: Rex Subject: Re: Shank Hall 11-2-07 On 11/5/07, 2fs wrote: > > > It seems kind of odd that it's never happened. That's kind of what I was thinking, too. Although Thompson doesn't seem to have much of an attitude about his awesomeness. You know, like asking to play one-on-one with Michael Jordan or something. Pete Buck once told a story about guesting with Patti Smith, and Smith trying to goad him into taking a solo over a band that included Tom Verlaine. He didn't. Maybe he has issues with all people named Tom. Speaking of RT, I rather like his new record. And speaking of new records, any opinions on the new Ray Davies? - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Nov 2007 13:27:29 -0500 From: "Bachman, Michael" Subject: RE: Shank Hall 11-2-07 - -----Original Message----- From: owner-fegmaniax@smoe.org [mailto:owner-fegmaniax@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Rex Sent: Monday, November 05, 2007 12:57 PM To: 2fs Cc: kevin; Michael Sweeney; fegs Subject: Re: Shank Hall 11-2-07 On 11/5/07, 2fs wrote: >> >> >> It seems kind of odd that it's never happened. RT is in a world of his own. Maybe a more traditional player player of old folk tunes and instruments, like John McCusker (Kate Rusby's ex) would bring a nice element to RT's music. >>You know, like asking to play one-on-one with Michael Jordan or something. Maybe he has issues with all people named Tom. Maybe Buck needed to bond with Verlaine while cutting a album together. Those blending of different styles sometimes work out, Eric Clapton and Duane Allman, Chet Atkins and Les Paul, Andy Summers and Robert Fripp. Robyn and Peter don't count as their styles are very much alike.
