I thought "Across the Universe" was pretty freaking awful as a movie, though the music wasn't terrible. I just saw the Bee Gees/Frampton "Sgt. Pepper" movie the other night and that IS bad (with the exception of the last 15 minutes or so--Billy Preston rules, and so does Carol Channing, Bonnie Raitt, Donovan, Ann & Nancy Wilson, et al. doing a disco version of the title song. In fact, it's so bad it's painful. Definitely NOT so bad it's good. Stevie Wonder's "We Can Work It Out" might surpass the original, as might Joe Cocker's "With a Little Help from My Friends." I think this steel-guitar cover of "Flying" on one of the rec.music.beatles tribute albums I participated on surpasses the original, too. (I didn't play on "Flying," of course..) Not sure if I can think of any others. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2007 10:20:02 -0700 From: "Stacked Crooked" Subject: The New Fall Season... ...is begun. . ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2007 11:40:32 -0700 From: Rex Subject: Re: The New Fall Season... Nice man. Anyway, I take these home and immediately pipe the big one, which is a 4-track (stand by for the tech questions) and start digitizing all thes ancient 1/4" tapes of my dad's band that I've been meaning to take care of for a long time (the problem having been the lack of players until now). And the tapes have all kinds of weird stuff interespersed with the band material, including some local radio from 1973, which is pretty cool (radio news from 1973 confirms that attention spans have indeed dwindled, or at least are strongly believed to have done so by anyone producing radio news now), and more than a few instances of either myself or my brother at very young ages being left to amuse ourselves with the Wollensak. Mostly we blather about Batman and Speed Buggy (which I seem to have pronounced "Said Buggy" at least half of the time). Then there's the bit where my grandmother interviews me, age 4 or under. I tell her in detail all about several varieties of crabs, and then grab a guitar and start strumming and singing loudly. This would've been around 1975 or so. Interesting nostalgia-inducing odors and all. We have a reel-to-reel as well. My parents bought it in the 60s. I know there is one tape where I sing "Der Mond ist aufgegangen". Unfortunately the player is broken in that it only plays as long as you keep the play button pressed. Must be something mechanical. Maybe I should look into a used player myself, because I know there are other recordings I would really like to have. Anyway, even if my parents' player still worked, digitizing would still be more of a hassle, because back then German audio equipment used DIN connectors! Most people only know them for MIDI, but until the late 70s/early 80s most audio equipment here didn't have cinch/RCA. - -- Sebastian Hagedorn Am alten Stellwerk 22, 50733 Kvln, Germany http://www.uni-koeln.de/~a0620/ "Being just contaminates the void" - Robyn Hitchcock ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 1 Nov 2007 08:08:15 -0400 From: "Bachman, Michael" Subject: FW: Fegdestiny: Genetic?
