I'm really asking how the various Rain Parade lineups worked-- since my last post, I've found hints that *Steve* Roback may have handled some lead vocals, even after Dave left, but the info is hazy as all hell... lead guitar duties totally ambiguous. The guitar work on "Emergency..." has a great Revolver sound that's awfully different from Opal and Mazzy Star, and which persists on the Dave-less "Crashing Dream", so maybe Piucci did do the lion's share of the leads. I just don't know. The "who did what on 'Left for Dead'" I figure will answer itsef soon, since, yeah, nobody else is gonna have it. According to this site http://guitarbands.de/rainparade.htm it looks as if the lineup I saw was either the 1984 or the 1985 incarnation, after David Roback had left. I think they played 'Crashing Dream' as well as the astounding 'No Easy Way Down', so it might well have been just before the 'Crashing Dream' LP came out. Is there a website somewhere which lists all their gigs, like the Robynbase? They were great, specially the guitar sound and the 'orchestral' drum parts. - - Mike Godwin n.p. October 19, 2007 Ray Davies: Working Manbs Cafe Steve Jelbert 3 of 5 stars By giving theirs away, Prince and Radiohead, and now Ray Davies, have sparked a debate about the true value of an album. The melancholy title track will likely inspire nostalgia for old Kinks tunes, but the sprawling Morphine Song, with its boisterous horn section, and Vietnam Cowboys, a dig at globalisation, are perfectly decent. A few Knopflery outbreaks of tastefulness aside, this is easily worth the price of a Sunday paper. Right - it came out last year some time. Is there a new Shins album in the pipeline? but, then, as is my want, i second-guessed myself into wondering > whether jeff is waiting for the next wrens album. Oh, everyone's waiting for the next Wrens album. I'm sure it will be out before the turn of the century. (They're notorious both for being delayed and delaying...) and now i'm wondering whether the wrens are even a band. They are. Although it begins to seem increasingly like Charles Bissell is pulling more weight, at least in terms of the guy getting out, playing songs, etc. But that might be more a function of their day jobs. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Oct 2007 09:15:06 -0700 (PDT) From: Jeff Dwarf Subject: Re: vs. starbucks On 10/20/07, lep wrote: > i saw [The Shins: Wincing the Night Away] > in a little display in whole foods this afternoon. > > i thought of jeff 2fs as i wondered whether it was the new one > (apparently not.) Well, it's the one that came out in January....I'm inclined to say that, in these days of the 30-36 month album cycles, 9 months old counts as "the new one." Okay, so it's one of those bands with two singers who sound similar (except that every other band that people say that about, I think the singers sound totally different from each other). Interesting. The post-(D)-Roback version of the band sounds more like the with-(D)-Roback version than either Opal or Mazzy Star do to me, although I seem to be in the minority. Rain Parade kept going with the psych-guitar sound while Opal and Mazzy have rootsier, grittier guitar things going on. I like both sounds, so it's all good for me. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Oct 2007 09:04:52 -0400 From: "Stewart C.
