In the last century, how many times>could you really say the Cubs were the best team in baseball but they just>didn't win it? Maybe once or twice, but not all that often. I think if you>want to claim an almost century's worth of suffering, it might be fair if>you're a Red Sox fan (since they lost sooooooo many heartbreakers and were>competitive nearly every year), but the Cubs suffering is more about time>than anything else.<< ...Well, that's plainly shite...and has no bearing on any individual's relationship with the team they root for, grew up with, bleed for -- I could give a rat's ass about the case for Boston (pre-'04) or 4-lost-Super-Bowls-in-a-row Bills or whatever other example could be tossed at me -- those aren't MY teams...And, as I've told others who don't seem to get it, if you want to just pick winners, might as well switch to the Yankees, the Pats, whoever, whatever -- their lifelong fans won a nice got-there-early lottery, which is fine. The White Sox fans here in '05 seem to think that "Woo - we won it first!" matters somehow (even though, of course, we won it twice before they ever did...AND multiple pre-WS championshiops before their team -- or its jr. league -- even existed)...so, if that matters, were they Red Sox fans in '04, Marlins in '03, Angels, etc.? No...it's an arc -- a journey...about following your team and rooting for it even if in last place - -- never "writing off this season." Good for them - whoever the "them" is -- when they win...but it has little to do with others and their relationship to their team. For some, it's only baseball (or football or rugby) -- for some, it's only life... >>The All Blacks, on the other hand, are like the Yankees if the Yankees made>it to the World Series every year but lost in the 7th game each time...<< ...and, really, anytime your analogy starts using the Yankees as a baseline, you have already lost 99% of your audience's sympathy (except, perhaps crazies who bemoan no WS wins since '00...as Phil Hartman-as-Frank Sinatra once said, "Boo-hoo -- ya had me then ya lost me"). >Commiserations, though. ...Thanks, though...(and, yes I know that was James and the previous was Marc...why bother answering 2 when you can do one last reply?) (my fault, anyway -- I brought it all up...sorry for wasting time with idiotic topics...) (and, BTW, thanks Jill...) Michael "That's about enough of all of this for now..." Along with the folks at _Yep Roc_ (http://www.yeproc.com/) Records, he's compiled I Wanna Go Backward, a healthy hunk of Hitchcock that gathers three of his 1980s solo discs-- Black Snake Diamond Role, I Often Dream of Trains, and Eye-- along with a double disc collection of B-sides, outtakes, home demos, and the like called While Thatcher Mauled Britain Part 1 & 2. The set, along with an individual release of each album with enhanced material and an eight LP Backward box, will be released October 16. Not enough Hitchcock for you? First, you're crazy, but second, you're in luck: early next year, another box entitled Bad Case of History is due. History will collect Fegmania, Gotta Let This Hen Out, Element of Light, and another outtake collection entitled Dynasty. Plus Yep Roc is making another out-of-print Hitchcock goodie, 1982's Groovy Decay, available digitally. And, if you're still fiending for some Hitchcock after all that, Robyn's got a U.S. tour in the works for November. Phew!
