Yes, the length of "suffering" has been longer, but how much of it has really been suffering and how much of it has been "well, we're going to suck again so I'm writing off this season and we'll think about really suffering if we're actually decent next year"? In the last century, how many times could you really say the Cubs were the best team in baseball but they just didn't win it? Maybe once or twice, but not all that often. I think if you want to claim an almost century's worth of suffering, it might be fair if you're a Red Sox fan (since they lost sooooooo many heartbreakers and were competitive nearly every year), but the Cubs suffering is more about time than anything else. The All Blacks, on the other hand, are like the Yankees if the Yankees made it to the World Series every year but lost in the 7th game each time. Except the World Series happens every four years, and the three seasons in between are spent entirely gearing up for the fourth year, and during those three years the Yankees won 110 games. In other words, they dominate, dominate, dominate, fall flat on their face the one time every four years when it is really on the line. The All blacks have what is generally regarded as at least equal to the best talent of any team in the world each and every time they take the pitch. Even when they play the powerhouse teams like South Africa, Australia, and (on their better days) England, they are regarded as favorites, and when international matches are held, the All Blacks win more than they lose. In terms of talent, they have more quality depth than any other nation, including nations much larger than that, and they have the best competitions feeding into the national team in the NPC and even the Super 14, which they tend to dominate as well (not this year, coincidently--two South African teams made the finals for the first time). In other words, they're a powerhouse team that, for some inexplicable reason, can win against all the other teams in the world except when it comes to the World Cup. Even some of the better rugby nations, such as Argentina and Scotland, have never--and this is over more than 100 years now--beaten the All Blacks. Now add to this that New Zealanders have rugby flowing through their veins in about ten times the concentration that Yankees or Red Sox fans have, a good dose of nationalism that you don't get in baseball, and a huge chip on their shoulder as a result of the deep-seated animosity towards the ABs by a lot of other countries because they have a tendency to absorb a good bit of talent through South Pacific Islanders who might otherwise be playing for the Fiji, Samoa or Tongan national teams but for a fourth uncle twice removed who was born in Christchurch and you start to get the idea. The Cubs lose and maybe they fire a manager, but life goes on in Chicago; The ABs lose, and there's a parliamentary inquiry. That inquiry has been repeated now every four years since 1987. In other words (and this is coming from a Portland Trailblazers fan, so I know a bit about suffering both in terms of length and through general misery of watching a talented team tragically snatch defeat from the jaws of victory on several notable occasions), the Cubs can't hold a candle when it comes to the All Blacks, and until they lose in about the next five World Series straight, you won't be able to convince me there's even a reasonable argument otherwise.
