I found out about the existence of this single not too long ago, and began doing my research. I came to the conclusion that Capitol Records' marketing strategy for the D's includes no physical media for CD Singles. This particular single came out in the UK on Rough Trade Records, and was mysteriously deleted not long after it came out. The people that have it seem to have gotten it at shows in Europe last fall, or from UK or European mail-order houses within a month or two of its release. But that was over a year ago. I think that if you really enjoy it, I think you'll find plenty more opportunities to fill the band's coffers and get yourself some overpriced concert tickets and t-shirts (etc.) in the bargain. Is it worth mentioning here that Neil Young has joined the "free album with concert tickets" bandwagon, in this case shipping the record to the ticketholders before the shows? It's a theme that will stretch into next year -- until he releases a new album with his latest band, the Venus 3. "Well, every dozen years or so it's time to re-release the back catalog," Hitchcock tells Billboard.com. "Of course, in that time, the back catalog has swollen somewhat. When you dig it up it seems to pull up even more material out of the ground. All this stuff accumulates. It's the opposite of a rolling stone which, of course, gathers no moss. This stuff gathers everything." The first fruits of Hitchcock's latest gathering will be heard Nov. 13 on the five CDs (or eight LPs) of Yep Roc's "I Wanna Go Backwards," which accumulates three albums -- "Black Snake Diamond Role," his solo debut from 1981, 1984's "I Often Dream of Trains" and 1990's "Eye," all with bonus tracks, plus the two-disc B-sides and rarities collection "While Thatcher Mauled Britain Part 1 & 2." Yep Roc is also releasing 1982's out-of-print "Groovy Decay" as a digital download. Hitchcock says Yep Roc is next targeting his recordings with the Egyptians during the '80s for a similar boxed set treatment, tentatively due May 1, 2008. Before that, however, Hitchcock hopes to release "Shadow Cat," a set of unreleased recordings from the '90s, while Britain's Sartorial label is planning to reissue the remastered catalog of his first band, the Soft Boys. "It's not as stimulating as making a new record, but it's far better than them being out of print," Hitchcock says of the archival projects. "I think I'm just a bit slower about that task than I am about making a new collection of songs." He's been doing that, too, with the Venus 3, his band with R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and his touring sidekicks Scott McCaughey (Young Fresh Fellows, Minus 5) and Bill Rieflin that debuted with last year's "Ole! Tarantula." Hitchcock says the group has already held sessions in England and Arizona and plans another one in Seattle in late November, with a release in the late summer or fall of 2008. "I think we've already recording hundreds of songs for it," he says. "It's great for me; I've got this band of guys that, because of all their other (groups), play all the time. So they're always just on and ready to go." Hitchcock begins an 11-date U.S. tour, accompanied by Harvey Danger frontman Sean Nelson, on Nov. 2 in Milwaukee. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 02 Oct 2007 02:48:54 +0200 From: Sebastian Hagedorn Subject: Chrome Dreams I hadn't even yet heard of Chrome Dreams 2, but a little investigation brought up this: Neil Young - Chrome Dreams The unreleased 1975 album by Neil Young. - --Tracklisting-- 01. There are a lot of bootleg renditions of it, but I don't think any of them are definitive. The two I have heard are more or less like the below, but a lot of the tracks are identical to versions on official, non-compilation Neil records: "Will to Love" and "Hurricane" and a few others are on "American Stars & Bars"; the version of "Pocahontas" is the one on "Rust" minus a few echoey string-scrape overdubs, whereas "Sedan Delivery" is totally different from its "Rust" version. "Captain Kennedy" is the same as the version on "Hawks & Doves". "Look Out for My Love" was redone for "Comes a Time"; "Too Far Gone" showed up completely re-recorded on "Freedom"... and so on. To make things even more confusing, one of the tracks here, "Homegrown", is also the *title track* to yet another unreleased, oft-bootlegged Neil album. The version of "Chrome Dreams" I own in physical form has 15 tracks, is missing a few of these, and has several other more rare things, several more common ones, and some other overlaps with real albums. I'd bet that when CD2 comes out, you'll see a lot more bootlegs of CD1 being blogged and posited as genuine. Which could be fine. I think Neil's official position is that the masters for the original album are "lost", although obviously most of the songs survive in their original form... and of course two official Neil records remain unreleased on CD, one of them brilliant.
