Don't know whether they're likely to be easily found in other parts of the word, but one of them in particular is definitely worth the search. First, I am pleased to report that - unlike several careers that point to the contrary, talent can be inherited from the parents. Liam Finn (Neil's son) has released his first solo album, "I'll be lightning", and it's a good solid effort. Oddly, it makes me think of another talented offspring, Rufus Wainwright, but with a decidedly Finn twist. But that effort pales alongside what is very possibly going to remain my NZ disc of the year, unless something surprisingly good happens in the next few months: SJD's "Songs from a dictaphone". A very fine effort, returning close to the form of "Southern lights" (which I regard as one of my top 20 New Zealand albums of all time). No it doesn't-- it makes one go "Lep, Lep, Leppo and the J-J-J-J-J-JOOVES!" Or a least that's what it makes this one go. The other stupid thing about STARSHIP TROOPERS is that, after it goes out of its way to dehumanize/deanthropomorphosize its villains as utterly inhuman, it introduces the "brain bug", the leader of the hive-mind, and what does it look like? A mammalian cerebral cortex, which somehow controles humans by plugging tentacles into their brains. That's some cool convergent evolution there. Also there is sound in outer space, which is of course impossible-- hello, no atmosphere to carry the sound waves? (That's meant to connote that I'm being tongue-in-cheek here.) - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 1 Sep 2007 22:58:27 -0400 From: lep Subject: Re: Some 2007 goodies from the south james says: > To whoever it was asking about good music from '07 that may have > escaped them, I'll chip in with a couple of Kiwi goodies. His album is due out on Yep Roc Jan 2008 and they are selling an EP at the crowded house shows. Caught just the end of his set when he was doing the song with tape loops. It was interesting but got mostly polite applause from the crowd. melissa ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 02 Sep 2007 12:05:52 -0400 From: gaseous clay Subject: Re: liam finn one time at band camp, Melissa Higuchi said: > Caught just the end of his set when he was doing the > song with tape loops. My bro' doing his looping bit at a coffee house gig. It's pretty long, so skip to the end if yer just interested in the effects. http://youtube.com/watch?v=C1f1vjIfCZQ - -tc ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Sep 2007 11:46:56 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: Let's go get sushi - and not pay! The acting was definitely an issue, but the creative dialog saved a lot of it. Much like it's cousin Deadwood. What pissed me off was that NOTHING was resolved. At least with Twin Peaks there were logical substories that one could get involved in. > A friend of mine had one line in the last episode, but he never > watched the show, so he had less of an idea about what was going on > than I did. A friend of mine is from IB so he was very excited about the show. Haven't had a chance to catch up with him about it yet.
