With some thought however, I suspect that some of my absolute favorites involve anticipation rather than the actual act; "Sex, Lies and Videotape" for instance. And Juliette Binoche in anything. Oh, and Isabella Rossellini. Yow! In this era of pop stars taking private jets to environmental benefits, it's nice to see this: Milwaukee's own Peter Mulvey, guitarist and songwriter extraordinaire, is doing a round of summer gigs sans gasoline - towing his guitar behind the bike. More at http://www.petermulvey.com/ The original High School Musical is already a classic. Actually since the basic plot outline was lifted from so many other classics, that much was pretty much assured...but very well executed, and it sure struck a nerve with kids from second grade on up to middle school (no small feat to cover such a wide demographic IMO). It's got all the elements and catchy tunes. The second one is laughable, especially Efron's hideous Avril-racoon makeup. What really got me was how well Disney had productized it at Disneyworld. We were there in March, and at MGM they had a live show roll through every hour during the afternoon. The kids would be wandering around and see other characters in costume ("look Dad, it's [insert name here]), but when the HSM float came through everything else stopped. Amazing. He's got my vote if so. Not that I expect him to do it, but it would be very nice if someone rousted the damned Puritans. I am so sick of Jesus this, Jesus that - if you love him so much why don't you marry him? Oh wait - you can't: that'd be, like, gay marriage. Bang-up job that Jesus is doing running everything. There's a muffler shop or some such that I drive past pretty often, with one of those billboards with moveable letters on it, that's spelled out something like DON'T WORRY - GOD IS IN CONTROL since about 2001 or so. Good thing we know who to blame: I mean, if Katrina and 9-11 are a demonstration of "control," what would out of control look like? (Rant mode off) I know some people individually for whom religious belief shows up in a positive way - but it seems to me that the only time organized religion does anything useful, it's in spite of that structure rather than because of it, and is always down to inspired individuals doing good. I really wish that in politics, for example, asking someone about their religious beliefs was as rare as asking them about their favorite sex positions. For another, the discs are all in neat little book-style cases. If you go the second route, it looks like you'll get the old fold-out cardboard cases, which IMO are far inferior: they require too much elbow room to get to the first and last discs of each season, and the discs have a tendency to fall out of their assigned slots. (However, confusing the issue, the Buffy DVDs have also been released in plastic slimpacks. If your second option came in slimpacks instead of the fold-out cardboard cases, that wouldn't be so bad. But the Chosen collection still has that bonus disc.) > same question for angel discs. I'd probably recommend the "special collector's set" for Angel too. It's not going to be released until Oct. 30 (just in time for Halloween!), and details about what exactly it contains are still sketchy at this point. But I'm pretty certain that it will use the book-style disc holders, just like the Chosen box set. And I wouldn't be surprised if it had a bonus disc, too. In other Buffy news, I've been too lazy to respond to the latest posts about seasons 6 and 7. But since I'm writing now anyway, I'll just quickly say that for me, both of those seasons improved tremendously on repeat viewing. (Season 7 remains perhaps my least favorite, but that's because the others are so *good* rather than because S7 is in any way bad.) Buffy and friends never lost my interest or sympathy, even in their most unpleasant moments. For example, I saw Buffy's grouchy and somewhat pompous period in S7, not as a character becoming less likeable, but as the interesting story of a likeable character struggling with her unwanted leadership role and not doing too well. Even the plot development that I like least, Willow's crack-- I mean, magic addiction, has merit as a way of showing us the dark side of the vast powers she developed. I thought Dawn was actually less annoying than she was (deliberately) in S5, and if I didn't love Kennedy, I didn't hate her either. The series finale was a bit clumsy thematically, but the basic idea of Buffy winning by empowering others felt right. But I agree that the last two seasons, and especially S7, had more awkward writing than any since early S2. And there could have been more Giles. It could have been Gilesier. Catching up on other threads, I have no piercings or tatoos and would probably never consider anything beyond a temporary tatoo; I missed the latest lunar eclipse; and I have never mentioned the New Pornographers to anyone under 18 years of age. - --Chris ______________________________________________________________________ Christopher Gross On the Internet, nobody knows I'm a dog. chrisg@gwu.edu ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Aug 2007 15:56:31 -0500 From: "Sumiko Keay" Subject: Re: poor grad student to be poorer...(a.k.a. dear buffy fegs, U.S. division) You know, the complete collection of Angel dvds is coming out shortly. . .
