We moved to the area in '91 and a lot of the merchants from Pacific Ave. were set up in a giant tent up by the clock tower. That was very cool from this east coaster's perspective - so much of what one would picture Santa Cruz to be like all the time. Now everything is back to "normal", by which I mean the businesses are back on the avenue and the combination of skate punks, homeless burnouts and pot smoke lingering in the air just adds to the unique character of the established shopping district. On a personal note, its been a wonderful Santa Cruz summer for my 5 year old daughter. She has a wet suit and a boogie board and has been enjoying the beaches at least once a week all season. The 30 minute ride over the mountain is a small price to pay for these experiences. They take you all the way down to the Boardwalk for a day at the beach, then pick you up for an afternoon ride back up into the redwoods.
