Thing is, a lot of their actual artwork seems almost anticipatory of the trend (particularly the earlier work of each artist): scribbly, nonsensical, sometimes misspelled words crammed atop images with a rather tenuous relation between the two. I thought the same thing, but I don't mind Regina Spektor, so that's OK. I do wish the whole album sounded like "1 2 3 4," but you can't have everything. > downloaded the new white stripes, god knows why. predictably, it's shitty > poopy crap. Do you mean "shitty poppy crap," or are you going for three defecation-related terms in the same sentence? That's true. Unlike their album sleeves, though, the fuel for the lolmeme is totally guileless, or at least aimed at making fun of the genuinely clueless (bad spellers, 13 year-old girls, gamer lusers). The references pile up so quickly it becomes really surreally clever, though, and effectively the same. PAVEMENT IST RAD!, right? If you'd seen one of these 15 years ago, you could only conclude it was the artsiest stuff ever. I think I find it entertaining because I sort of passively resisted all the net conventions (emoticons, abbreviations, lowercasifications) out of laziness (too hard to learn to type all over again), but they aggregated in my mind, and then, boom, this thing puts them all together in a self-mocking, unstoppable meta-blender. Of, you know, viral hexan-strife and false grails and shit. And you just have to, you know, LOL. - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Jun 2007 21:46:34 -0700 From: Tom Clark Subject: Re: fess up On Jun 22, 2007, at 9:18 PM, 2fs wrote: > On 6/22/07, Rex wrote: >> >> >> Y'know, another perfect subject would be Mark E.
