Co-workers of mine have toured prototype digital video storage facilities which are completely automated in that they have mechanical arms that can pluck any tape from the shelf and get it to a digitizing machine. Scans the labeling while it's at it. When you're not telling it to do a tape that you need right now, it busies itself methodically digitizing everything else one tape at a time (or backing them up). Pretty mind-boggling considering the size of the tape libraries I tend to deal with. Now, it is true that somebody still has to put the tapes in the storage compartments to begin with. Once. There are also some fairly easily obtained multi-disc burners out there, where you can load 100 or so at a time on a spindle and the machine loads them into the drive itself, in some cases inscribing the picture-side of the disc, too. A hypothetical mass ripping machine wouldn't be much different; the problem being, of course, that who would need one after their library was ripped? - -Rex ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 15 May 2007 20:46:37 -0500 From: 2fs Subject: Re: What about them CD thingies? My stone-age brain likes having things to look at and hang on to - although it is true that once I've had the CD for a while, I no longer bother. (Half the time, btw, I don't bother reading the lyrics even once...although that's mostly because too often they're in like 4-point type...) Your library actually preserves the cover art? The artwork of CDs I've gotten from the library have generally been utterly plastered over with various bits of library-records paper. Plus, it seems that most CDs are checked out from libraries by ill-tempered baboons: I'm not sure why, but if there's an uncracked jewelcase with a library CD, I'm amazed. Sometimes they'll put them in one of those superpowered thick plastic outer cases - but usually not. I remember one CD (a two-disc set) had packaging *so* damaged, the discs themselves were in imminent danger of being clawed to death by the remaining two teeth "holding" the discs in place: I actually donated a blank double-disc jewelcase to the library when I returned it, along with a note saying "repackage this!" I never checked whether they actually did... Speaking of being Robin Hood (I almost typed "Robyn Hood": I mean, around here, that's what comes after R-o-b...), if you really think the CD isn't worth $18.98 (it isn't: but unless you're in Lower Slobovia - or England - you should be able to find new CDs for under $15), maybe you can be the person who buys it, rips it, and seeds it for everyone else. Because, you know, when you die, you'll find out God's actually the main party sharing sound files on the web - he'll thank you. - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 May 2007 03:03:26 +0000 From: "Michael Sweeney" Subject: Re: REAP!!!!! We became involved in a lawsuit concerning First Amendment rights and Hustler magazine. Without question, this was my most important battle b the l988 Hustler Magazine, Inc., v. Jerry Falwell case, where after millions of dollars and much deliberation, the Supreme Court unanimously ruled in my favor. My mother always told me that no matter how much you dislike a person, when you meet them face to face you will find characteristics about them that you like. Jerry Falwell was a perfect example of that. I hated everything he stood for, but after meeting him in person, years after the trial, Jerry Falwell and I became good friends. He would visit me in California and we would debate together on college campuses. I always appreciated his sincerity even though I knew what he was selling and he knew what I was selling. The most important result of our relationship was the landmark decision from the Supreme Court that made parody protected speech, and the fact that much of what we see on television and hear on the radio today is a direct result of my having won that now famous case which Falwell played such an important role in." My guess is, they searched a database of known sex offenders, compared it with their own membership info, and deleted a few accounts so they could claim to have a "zero tolerance" policy. (Incidentally - and not with specific reference to this issue - it disturbs me the popularity of the phrase "zero tolerance." With things that nobody actually does have tolerance for - like, say, child molestation - the phrase is meaningless. In other areas - like, say, the "sex offender" whose offense was having consensual sex with his 16-yo g/f when he was 18 (actual case in Wisconsin some years back) - it's obnoxious, and proto-fascist in its law-and-order worship. Maybe I should sign up for a MySpace, claim that I'm a sex offender, and see how long it takes them to delete my account. (I'm kinda dubious that they're really able to verify actual names, btw...in fact, I *do* have a MySpace, which I signed up for only in order to interact with some bands' MSs, but I don't recall using my real name at all.) - -- ...Jeff Norman The Architectural Dance Society http://spanghew.blogspot.com ------------------------------ End of fegmaniax-digest V16 #205 ********************************
